Humber Hawk/ Super Snipe/ Imperial circa 1966/67.

My money is on the Super Snipe.

Twin headlamp 3 litre six pot.

I had an Imperial some years ago. Glass partition etc.

Thrupp and Maberley stretch between the doors.

Nice pimpmobile....VERY strong.

Takes time to find the fuel filler on these motors.

Behind the reflector!

The n/s/f door still carries an IMPERIAL badge. It's in such a state that the A-pillars have rusted completely away from the bulkhead... Spare parts only I'm afraid!

I'd echo that comment of Michiels, what a great place for shite hunting.For some unfathomable reason I am starting to really like late Austin Metros in those funky primary colours. Good to see some original 80's Minis as well.Why do cars last longer there? - you commented that there's no MOT but most of your spots looked in good condition anyway.Are new cars comparatively expensive? or is there a high proportion of retirees perhaps, happy to trundle around in the bright yellow Metro they bought 20 years ago? I suppose low annual mileages must have something to do with it!P.S big black yank is a circa 1950 Buick.

The low mileages/high coffin-dodger count theories explanations go some way towards explaining the amount of older tin knocking about. Other factors are the restricted speeds (40mph max) and the lack of salt on roads in winter, though the sea air goes some way towards offsetting that.

 

New stuff's always been a tad less expensive than in the UK mainly due to VAT not being charged, but nowadays there's a one-off "Vehicle Registration Duty" payable on importation and levied according to engine size. I believe there may be an exemption for vehicles over 20 years old though.

 

- there's little in the way of TRUE shite (late 1970s/early 1980s Renners and Jap tat) left but there's plenty more stuff to be bagged the next time I'm over, I only really stuck to the south coast on this visit.

Tatty but original Sierra. Cars of this size few and far between; plenty of smaller stuff and a fair number of big BMs/Mercs/4x4s etc but traditional repmobiles never popular here.

Err...well....sleep seems such a waste of time! 2 or 3 nights last week I didn't get to bed till 5am. Won't be long before I can no longer get away with that physically! By then not even Rocket Fuel coffee will rescue me! :shock:

 

I think people didn't pick up on these because you simply hit us with more pictures of shite then we could take in in such a short space of time!

 

I'm about to hit you all with a deluge of pictures taken in Belgium a week or so ago - nothing really spectacular, there didn't seem to be anything older than late 80s in everyday use. Feel free to point out my mistakes, I have to be able to take it if I'm gonna dish it out! :P

It is a HRG, effectively a rival to the contemporary MG during the 1920s, although this example built I believe in 1950. Had no idea so few were built - probably got the highest survival rate of any 20th century car model (Except for the MGB, natch, of which 500,000 were built and 600,000 survive)

 

The stack of ice cream van bodies? (I've already typed this tale once then lost it after pressing the wrong key) Essentially - sequence of events is:

 

Authorities tipped off that fleet of prehistoric CFs is in cataclysmic condition

Vehicles inspected and condemned amid allegations of VIN fraud

(same number plates spotted on two different vans working simultaneously at opposite ends of island, hehe)

Bedford bits ripped out prior to owner seeking more "modern" chassis to transplant the remainder onto (in this case mk3 Transhits)You can still buy a 99 Flake from an elderly CF though! Just as you can in many parts of Britain I s'pose. I'll aim to obtain photographic evidence this weekend, if the weather holds :)

Okay, so I went out to three parties Saturday night and got HAMMERED. Didn't have much luck with the girl hosting the last one so without a convenient bed to crash into, I decided to stay up and work off the booze by riding around to see what shite was parked up. Starting about 4.40am (!) when it was getting nicely light, nobody around at that time so uninhibitied tat-spotting. Gave up around 9am - saw so much that I'm having to split it into two sections (the next one to come later this week).

Stickers on side window betray previous use as a taxi. I believe it saw occasional use in public service till very recently :shock: (or I may be confusing it with a white Toyota Crown estate of similar vintage if there were the two of them at one stage) :shock: it appears to be still in use and yes that is red insulation tape over most of the rear clusters :D

Very absorbing stuff. The Festiva thing is a left hooker so god only knows which country that came from, I had always thought they ended up in Europe as Mazdas and nothing else. The Sapparo has an interesting grill too, I cannot recall whether I seen cars in the UK with those.

 

The Datsun 280C Cedric is a find and a half. Odd thing about that is lack of rear wipers. Care to figure this one out Nigel?

Difficult to know where to look!The Cedric estate is a 260C (330), my UK brochure shows they didn't get rear wipers, or any form of adornment on the massive chrome bumpers. Saloons and the later 280C estate (also 330, different grille) variously got overriders and/or bits of rubber on the corners.

Top detective skills on that fiat rallycar, it was indeed j51131, if you look in the background you will see a silver car that also appears behind the dodge van. :)

 

Jersey used to have some "Anglo American" auctions late 80s-early 90s, which accounts for some of the more bizarre stuff on the roads, used to be a lot of cast-off vehicles used for type approval purposes apparently. Something to do with the Jersey SVA test being easier to pass than the UK equivalent.

 

Don't remember any CF2 ice cream vans on Jersey, they were all very early mark 1 examples far as I can tell!
