The aim is to have the floor done next week, well that's the aim anyway.

What am I doing wrong? Some pictures seems to upload upside down and at wrong angles....

I gather it's 'just because', other people appear to get the same issue.  Those chassis rails don't look too bad considering the state the bed floor was in.

I'm replacing two of them, one was so bad it actually rotted away only half was still attached to the car :-)

But you're right, most of them aren't too bad to be honest.

One down, one left to do.......but it's Sunday and don't think the neighbours would be too happy. Next week ......

What was the process here, have you fabricated the repair sections yourself? Intrigued!

Oh I so wish I could take the credit for this however.........I was in Selco with my dad buying a load of materials when out of the corner of my eye I saw a number of lintels similar profile to the cross members on the Shifter. So I ended up buying two of them (you can see the one that hasn't been cut in the background with insulation inside it) and a number of measurements and cuts later, it matches the original perfectly :-)

I DIDNT CHEAT - I just found a "quicker" way :-)

These are actually much stronger as they are thicker.

All,

So I've hit a bit of a brick wall with regards to a new floor for the truck. I must have approached at least 7 or 8 breaker yards (including the one mentioned above for commercial vehicles) and they've all told me the same thing, they won't let me cut the floor out of a van due to fire risk and therefore insurance implications.

I am now even considering new panels however it seems absurd to spend hundreds of pounds on new panels that will have to be "bastardised" into shape.

I will take accurate measurements and post them later, however if anyone has any panels in their sheds or can think of a different approach I am all ears.......

Have you tried WJ Furber, in Shropshire? They have or had a commercial vehicle breakers. Also, if you're really quick try http://www.davidkellycars.co.uk/ they have all manner of older stuff in and as one person on here can confirm, they won't mind you cutting something out.

When I say be quick it's because they're closing very soon and clearing the yard out, so would humbly suggest getting hold of them pronto if you think they can help.

I'm based down in Surrey............forgot to mention.

Is David Kelly the place old Dacia's went and rested in peace?

I wonder if they still have a Denem somewhere hidden away.........think I saw a picture or a post about a green one.

You can get a cordless angle grinder nowadays, must be ideal for that sort of job, could pay for itself in one go if you find a suitable candidate

Posted

Either that or buy a local MOT failure example of a suitable van, cut the floor out and weigh in the rest.

Posted

I wish it was that easy........they won't let you cut in their yard, regardless of whether its cordless or not. Apparently the risk posed by the flying sparks is to great so therefore anything that involves sparks is completely out of the question.

I did have a cheeky lad tell me to take out the floor with a hammer and chisel, not sure if he was impressed by my prompt f@ck off reply.......I had enough by that point.

Guess a donor vehicle might be the way forward.........but i'm hoping that won't be the case. I don't have that much room and if another scrap car turns up, my mrs will serve me with divorce papers straight away (may not be such a bad thing actually :-D )

Just take a hammer and sharpened chisel or an axe, choppy choppy.

So if you offer to buy a floor then how will they cut it out?

Comes to something when a scrapyard starts moaning over H&S.

I personally think this is where double standards come in......because if they wanted to, they could cut it themselves but not one was interested in doing that (of course I offered to pay)

It is hard work and not as straight forward as it sounds however nothing is impossible, especially when you are financially rewarded for it but guess I am wanting too much on this occasion.

I've started looking at engineering companies in the area and maybe, JUST MAYBE, they have some sort of ribbed steel sheets that they sell.

I did have one smart @rse suggest, corrugated roof sheets.......  (only 0.5mm thick - WAY too thin, before anyone asks why they are not suitable)

NOOOO, David Kelly can't be closing, that place was awesome when we went up to strip that Lancia Y10, so many old heaps hanging around, polluting the water table. It must be one of the last placed with that sort of level of old chod still left.

We should get an mini-autoshite gathering happening there and get this Dacia a floor pan and rip any other useful looking or odd bits from as much autoshite as we can before it all gets fragged.

I used to go quite regularly in the late 90s, as they had not one but two Stellars in there amongst the Jags. Count me in for a visit if one is arranged - it's not *too* far from me, and I can bring a reasonable sized (wheeled) generator to help with powering cutting tools if allowed. I really can't see them being too bothered about H&S though!

Oh we could be onto something here..............even if I sort the Dacia out, which I am hoping to do this week i'd still be up to meet up and have a wonder and who knows what I may find and take home

ALL.

I am VERY keen on paying this place a visit, I've just come across these pictures........will email to see if the cars still exist in the yard or have been crushed.

Is anyone local or know the place well enough to know if these fine machines are still about?

I'm many many miles away, but would very happily have another nose around that place and all the chod before it disappears.

I'm quite local and I;m off this week, so I don't mind going for a snoop. It's worth checking when they close (for good) though, as the FaceAche message I was linked to implied it was very soon.
