James Mays Cars of the People

Just watched it. Rather enjoyed it. I think the VW love thing at the end was just to complete the circular narrative of the series. Of the three, this was more May like and less TG with him fawning over velour interiors and fake wood trim in the humdrum saloons of the 80s.

The best bit for me was to see that my old Ambassador is still alive and well! (White 2 litre Vanden Plas auto. I bought it from the original owners wife with 3000 miles on it and still on its original everything! Rather longer and sadder story but I'll leave that to the pub)

You must have loved seeing that!

I know the current owner. If you aren't already, I'd be happy to put you in touch :-)

I was rather dissappointed with the XR4x4 they had. Could they have not found an un-barried wannabe Cosworth example? The Calibre on the other hand was super!

Calibres are factory-Barry.

It's fine. As long as it's being looked after as it really was the most unmolested example I have ever seen, let alone bought. I remember it's first MoT after a gentle fettling and my tame tester at the time checked again and again to see if he could find anything!

All that was wrong was the rounded off corners through giffer parking and a fag burn on, I think, one of the seats. That's it. Everything else was like new.

It's with a man who loves it to bits, and it sits alongside an 820 and a Princess. :-)

There is supposedly another episode of this to come.

As evidenced by the yet to be seen cars on this transporter - except the white GTi.

The 306 Rallye was bought by the TG/James May people, from a mates mate, afaik.

Not this series. Yesterday's was episode three of three.

The white 205 was shown, but the other three probably made it as far as the cutting room floor.

Yeah. It is also possible they are intended for Top Gear, though.

Does the name Phil wright ring a bell?

Not to me it doesn't. It's currently owned by Lee Allen.

It was 10 times better than Top Gear. Mainly because it didnt feature Clarkson & the short arsed fella. And the content was good.

Just watched episodes 2 and 3, the second one was good a piece of mainstream tv I've seen for ages, funny, interesting and great for car nerds (notwithstanding the pointless machine-gunning of 2CVs)

The third episode features much footage of east Kent during the Rolls Royce segment, including the church in the village I grew up in (St. Mary the Virgin, Eastry) - I wasn't expecting that:

I enjoyed the last one, the Capri/Mustang chase, the trim level top trumps and the rep race all made me laugh. Plus I was genuinely gunning for the Pug 205 to do a better lap time than the Porsche.

I'm not surprised they must have bought some of the cars, a Porsche 911 Turbo (worth maybe £30k?) owner wouldn't have wanted his pride and joy to be raced like that on a very wet day.

I like the way that May drove the Countach through Burford - the town he said he'd carpet bomb were he to come to power.

Burford's OK - it's Minster Lovell that I can't stand
