Freak Or Unique: Motoring Innovations

Ribbon speedometers.

I can only imagine that watching the speedo of a Rover 2000 SC whilst the driver is trying to coax it up to 100 mph must be akin to sitting in front of your computer watching a fucking enormous piece of software installing. In fact I might start selling stick on speedo arrows at classic Rover shows so the hapless owner can see whether it's bothered accelerating any more over the last five minutes.

Same for rev thingies.

The leccy digi one in the Supra was a head f**k. I found it hard to stabilize the revs if you actually looked at it.

I like DRLs. I like being more visible, if it stops people missing my car on a quick glance in their mirrors before a lane change I don't see what the problem is. I've tried to enable them on the Touran too but it needs VAGCOM to do it.

I just noticed reference to these in another thread. Have we had self-closing boots yet?

BMW have them, I think they are operated from the key.

DRLs were a very good idea and I'm glad that they have been made a standard for new cars. My car doesn't have them so I just always drive with the headlights on.

^ And so (I would have thought) increasing the chances of someone going into the back of you because your brake lights are less obvious in the daytime...

DRLs are another one of these things that, yes, are probably a good idea in the real world, but just wouldn't be necessary if people could be relied upon to use a bit of common sense (eg going to the effort of putting their headlights on when visibility is poor).

I'm struggling to agree with that. Brake lights are quite bright, on my car they are in a separate section of the cluster and I have a high level also. I think that someone that would run into the back of a car because the brake lights were slightly less visible is doomed to do it regardless.
