I have used one called Daneholes Garage, on the Daneholes Roundabout in Grays who do MOT's and nothing else.

They charge full whack of course but are happy to change a bulb or realign lights to get you through. The guy there does a proper job and a pass from him is as good as you can get. And you have the comfort knowing that if the shocks need changing, then he won't derive any benefit so won't be telling porkies to try and secure some business. You can't always say the same about Kwik Fit type places.

I used Peter James in Dagenham for my last one, mainly because they did my tyres through Blackcircles and I wanted to give them some more business as they were really good. Mark there was more than happy to let me observe close up, to be honest I think he appreciated having someone about who understood what he was doing and as he was on his own that day he probably wanted some company. I like places that let you get close up as if they say a ball joint is worn I like to see it for myself.

It's also nice to get a really good look under your car, all good under mine with no advisories.

The Bishops Waltham one. It's tucked away, blink and you'll miss it.

Ah, that's pretty close to me, nice to know an alternative if my local one starts playing silly buggers - Cheers

A white 205GTi, a blue MX5 - both not for consideration here as they aren't allowed in the chod club! Plus my ratty red Eunos - daily hack - nice car, well sorted, shame about the paintwork......

Plus an old 350 Powervalve but this aien't a bike forum.

I'm sure the white 205 will be accepted if the foam is falling out of one of the seats and "the arches are a bit scabby but should clean up OK".

Local place does the prerequisite annual "inspection" for $10.

You might imagine the cursory glance that buys- it wouldn't even satisfy most scrapyard owners these days.

But hey, at least the brake lights and wipers work.

Like Barefoot, I use the DS specialist Pallas Auto to outsource my MOT if the car is going to them about MOT time. But... because it takes two three hour round trips to leave the car with them and then go and collect it I us our local garage, the one that MOTs the Peugeot of Last Resort, at other times, they are usually very good and listen when I say don't jack the back wheels up because they will hide in the top of the wheel arches if you haven't got the suspension on the High setting and won't come down despite trying to tempt them with offers of cake.

They had a locum chap one Saturday who thought he new better and didn't listen and then spent twenty minutes faffing around with blocks of wood while I stood back smiling. He was then determined to fail the car but couldn't find anything despite thoroughly inspecting even the brand new, just installed, never been used rear seat belt webbing.
