The German ship Pamir which, in 1949, became the last commercial sailing ship to round Cape Horn. She capsized and sank in September 1957 in a hurricane off the Azores, with the loss of 80 crew.

What amplified the tragedy in popular perception is that the vast majority of the 86 crew were cadets, young boys aged 16 - 18.

Merely 6 people survived. There was a superb film made about that.
