Guest Breadvan72 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 In a rare moment of clarity, I have just coco'd that three of my shitheaps come up for OMG TAXDISC at the end of July, and another at the end of August. This are make I say ARSE. I don't suppose that I can be alone in facing this scenario of wankytossy wankytoss ness. eddyramrod and cms206 2
Ratdat Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Not enough tax exemption going on I'd say. To remedy this problem... BUY MOAR OLD CARZ. SambaS, brickwall, Pete-M and 3 others 6
Skizzer Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Could be worse, they could all be needing an MOT at the same time too. Or are they? AndyW201 and Twiggy 2
beko1987 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I thought I was a numpty for the tax and test on the xm falling next month. Luckily I get paid before the tax is due so can buy it on payday and legitimately say its in the post! Need an mot though. bV do you know any local just MOT places near Thame/you? My usual chap is busy and far away now!
Bobthebeard Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Simply use the tax disc that has the longest time to run and place it in the car of choice. Given the latest DVLA shenanigans you will* be ok. Then wait until October. beko1987 1
mercrocker Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I failed miserably too....Despite many years of trying, failing and swearing, my two liable vehicles which I have owned together for at least 6 years are both due the same month just as they were when I first had them. I even tried SORNing one but still managed to re-tax it in time to co-incide with the other one six months later. The only way out is to tax one of them for a year but then I wouldn't eat for a month.....
nigel bickle Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Hah! Amateurs. I get a discount now -for bulk buying! (but not really, sadly) eddyramrod, Junkman and HillmanImp 3
Junkman Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I faced a similar scenario a few years ago. By means of some strategic SORNing (P6 of d00m engine grenadisation helped*, too), I managed to spread it out a bit better over the course of the year. The New Improved capitalist Tory unfair rolling forward tax-heaven for the rich will influence my future purchase decisions, no doubt.
cms206 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I've ended up spreading mine thusly:Montego insurance - MarchMontego & 940 tax - AprilCouncil Estate tax - MayCouncil Estate & 940 insurance - JuneMontego & 940 MOT - AugustCouncil Estate MOT - SeptemberNot the most effective planning ever.
Spiny Norman Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 When I had a Saab and a Mercedes at the beginning of last year I had the tax, insurances and MOTs all due within about 4 weeks of each other. Cost me about a grand, right after Xmas.
Guest Breadvan72 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 MoTs spread out a bit more sensibly, but not that much more: both Lancias in October, Alfa in November, Landy in February and wife-o-Pug in March. OK, not spread out sensibly at all, then. Two lots of insurance, ancient (Footman James group classics policy) and modern (Chaucer Direct), all up in April. Loadsa Mot places in and near Thame, Beko, but I use the one at Postcombe. This area is awash with indy garages and MoT stations because it is affluent, so everyone has 27 cars. All the garages are fully booked all of the time. Big one with lots of ramps on the road from Thame to Milton Common. Quality unknown. One by Milton Common, two in Stokenchurch, ditto, one at Bledlow, ditto, one in Watlington, ditto, two or three in Thame itself, one on road towards Great Milton, etc, etc. One at Tiddington that is good and old car friendly. beko1987 1
Junkman Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 This area is awash with indy garages and MoT stations because it is affluent, so everyone has 27 cars. Don't forget that everyone there also has two aeroplanes, a yacht at his holiday villa in the Maldives, one in Barbados, and a Motorhome in Florida.
hauserplenty Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Thanks to this thread, I now realize just how lucky I am to not have to deal with the MOT system (as said in the thread about NI; CBA to PHACT CHK SOZ INNIT.) Smog testing is a doddle, compared to what you lot are dealing with. Your climate seems to be the best reason. Rust is simply not much of an issue here in SoCal, although it is in other parts of the country. But all our taxes are paid at registration time, directly to the DMV. If you can park a car on private property, you can pay around $25 to file a PNO, or "non-op" as it's often called. If you just let the registration lapse, the new owner has to pay all the fees and interest. After that, they give you a registration sticker which you stick on the plate (after which I always cut it up with a razor blade so it can't be stolen) and you're legal to drive for another year. We don't have taxation based on engine displacement, but we do pay different rates for smog testing according to the engine's "emitter profile." A Northstar engine would have a tougher time and cost a bit more than a Toyota 22R. But when They finally want 22R's off the road, they just raise the bar and...more of them fail and are then wholesaled into Mexico or somat.Falsified registration is a felony too...putting the wrong plates on, etc. can get you busted, dude. Big time.If you can't smog the car in time to register it, you can get a 3-month temporary permit. But that ends up costing a lot more in the long run... eddyramrod 1
michael1703 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 For years I had said I'd get my mot to run out in summer months so that I could spend long dry summer evenings with nice 20+degrees and daylight until 10pm, oxy acetylene torch in one hand and a bottle of peroni in the other Did I ever manage it? Did I bollocks... catsinthewelder 1
SambaS Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Mmm, Polonez runs out the day before we get back into England in it, by which time Samba and MG will also need TAX. And the Monza is meant to be returning to the road the same month so that's 4 and the Jimp isn't far off
Jim Bell Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I once realised that my XJ40s tax and Mot were up in the same week.I picked up my old fashioned adding machine, tapped the buttons with numbers on, pulled the handle at the side at the correct intervals, then sat back and sucked air through my teeth. Then I sold it.
