In the spirit of autoshite, I shall ignore your specification for a less than 4m long, cheapish, mid-life crisis, sportscar and suggest either something V8 and American, or an XJS is just* what you need. Alternatively a Series Land Rover with the roof off.

If it was my money a Saab floppy would be sitting on my drive

You could have mine, I think it's a mk3.5,  for £750 now the sun has gone in and I have to grow up... VOLKSWAGEN GOLF AVANTGARDE CABRIO A 1997, metallic green/black, 2 door, 1984cc petrol auto 87000 miles

Definitely MX5. MK 1s are brilliant but as said, not a lot of luggage space but the boot is quite deep if you take out the space saver. I had a MK1 auto and I bloody loved it. Had an SL 500 at the same time and prefferred the Mazda!

I looked for ages for another MK1 auto but couldn't find one anywhere so bought my current MK3. The MK 3 is a much more together car and feels a bit too 'grown up'. The MK1 is the boy!

I'm loving the Saab floppy top I got from Wuvvum of this parish a few months ago. It went through the mot on wednesday with only a new headlight needed. (£20 from local saab nerd).

Bargain roof down motoring and good fun to boot.

XR3i Cabriolet mate, I know someone who knows someone who can get you a good'un from along da London Road in Southend. All proper like one owner and low miles.

Roofless Audi 80s seem to be as unloved as MGFs - both are good cars. The MGF would be my choice, they're great little machines and dirt cheap, what with all the OMGHGF worries amongst many. Find someone who knows these engines (or look up how to avoid all probs) and they're as reliable and long-lived as anything else.
