Electric window on drivers side packed up

I'm having a bit of trouble sourcing a new/secondhand front drivers window motor for my 1993 Audi Cabriolet and just wondered if anyone knows whereabouts I could source a cheap one from.

First of all I thought it must of been the OMG audi electric window relay problem but I tried another relay and the window is still as dead as a dodo and can hear a nice healthy click from the relay so I imagine it's ok.

Also I just wondered is it possible that there is another window motor from the VAG range that will fit if there's one that would be easier to source.

Hmmmm. Early 90s Golfs electric windows tend to fail regularly, but that's usually the worm gear stuff - the motor still whirrs but nothing happens, OR the motor tries to turn but jams.

I have two switches on the car..

One does all the windows at once which is positioned in the centre console (drivers side won't go down on that one ) plus it's the same on the switch that controls just the drivers window in the door, so I can rule out the switch.

It's just completely dead no whirring etc but about a month ago the window would work occasionally just rather slowly.

I'm sure my brother has one of those electrical testers which I may borrow to see if I can find a current is getting to the motor.

The window failed on my '92 S2 Coupe, but that was (IIRC) the cable, it had frayed and snapped. I was trying to sell the car at the time, and it picked it's time, it went tits up just as the buyer arrived. He didn't buy it.

I found a complete mech in a breaker's yard to fix it.

As others have said, get a multimeter on it (a cheap one from ebay is fine) and find out where the fault is. Some parts from Audi 80s/90s/Coupes might fit.

Hmmmm. I thought German cars are soooo good and never phale and last 4EVAH?

Anyway, is this the required part?

If yes, you now got the Audi part numbers. I think one is for the mech, the other for the motor.

They are the same in the floppytop and the k00p, if that helps.

Can you get the lend of a multimeter?  If so set it to resistance and put it across the terminals of the motor, it should give you a low reading (less than 10 ohms). if it reads more than this or zero, it is probably dead :(

Just to add you might be able to fix it if the resistance reading is very high, this is often caused by the brushes being worn out or stuck in their holders so they don't make good contact with the commutator  take them out and replace/clean them with a suitable solvent. Whilst you have the motor apart you can then also check the resistance directly across each segment, of the commutator, they should all be about the same.

Thanks for the all the advice.. I managed to fix it in the end as I bought a new motor (second hand motor) for £35 and it works perfectly. :)

I did try repairing the previous motor but managed to snap the motor arm while stripping the armature down.
