Play in gearbox on an Audi A4

I wonder if anyone can give me a bit of advice, my old winter hack 1995 1.6 fwd Audi A4 is sitting on the drive looking sorry for itself and while I'm not using it I want to get an annoying problem sorted out on the old girl...

I find at low speeds the car seems to have a certain amount of play and a bit clonk when pulling away and it also happens when I'm easing off the accelerator at low speeds but there's no movement in the gear stick.

It's been like that for ages and the gearbox doesn't whine and changes gear lovely.

I had a new clutch fitted about 3 years ago and it was the same before that when I first bought it..

It's quite annoying in stop start traffic and just want to find the problem without spending to much on it and wondered where I should start looking.

Inner d/shaft joints? Sliding tripod type? Splines on outer cv joints/hub worn?

I'm going to go for engine mount. On my Leon I had the same clonking coming on and off the power. Pop the bonnet and see if you can get the noise by rocking the engine - on mine it was the drivers side engine mount, on top of the turret, was a good couple of turns loose.

I managed to get out between the showers earlier on today as I wanted to get the old battery off and give it a recharge as I won't be using it at till September and it's already been standing since February and while I was at it I thought I better check the engine mounts as pillock suggested.

I managed to get a good 360 turn on the socket on one side and 180 on the other, so it's fingers crossed next time I use the car during the winter months.

I had an 02 a4 in a few weeks back for a fault code read . Code came up for a faulty engine mount. !! had a look round and the ns mount has a connector going in to it. I can only assume its for it to stiffen up under certain conditions.

An engine mount sensor FFS , this is the sort of shit that makes me hate VAG cars . Just not necessary .
