Swords Classic Car Show - 6th April 2014

I was on my way back from Dublin Airport yesterday afternoon, when I spotted some "CAR SHOW/SALE" signs, and decided to investigate - Yes, it's that time of the year, when fresh paint is applied to wob, and dusty barn finds are dragged out for all to view...

Plenty of shiny blue oval rally clones, and plenty sherpa coupes, but a few AS notable entrants too...

OMG BARN FIND!

Alas, no price on it - Just "Renault 20TS AS SEEN - CONTACT MOBILE 089 *** ****"

(I took a side on picture of it with the advert, but can barely make out the digits!)

RHD Volga???

Would seem to be the case - Not sure what the story was with it...?

Possibly - But the sills didn't look right to me (perhaps they came out the factory like that?!)

I just found this on Wikipedia:

International variants

GAZ-24 Volga was exported to many countries from Indonesia and Latin America to Western Europe. Right-hand-drive export versions also existed. In Europe one of the most popular Volgas were cars, both sedans and wagons, assembled in Belgium by Scaldia-Volga.These cars were equipped with Indenor diesel engines, a 2.1 litre unit with 62 PS (46 kW) until the 2300 D was introduced for 1980. The 2.3 litre XD2 has 70 PS (51 kW). Those models were called M24D and M24DB (Break, station wagon), and there was also a "Luxe" version. Standard Volgas with Soviet gas engines were sold as M24 and M24B (Break). Cars that were sold in Europe often had such features as metallic paint, simulated vinyl roof, leather interior and other luxuries. Station wagons sometimes had simulated "wood" decoration and often a rear window wiper and heater. These features were usually installed by local European GAZ dealers.

By late 1983, Belgian Volgas were no longer available with sedan bodywork nor with the petrol engines. The Diesel Break came either as the "N" (Normale) or the better equipped "GL".

Hmmmm...

From personal memory, in about 1983/1984, we had several GAZ test mules at BMW, fitted with the then new M21 turbo diesels.

Nothing ever became of this project.

Irrelevant side note: At the same time, we had a batch of new Thunderbirds to be fitted with the turbo diesel.

Back then, I found it hilarious, that both countries determined to nuke us, showed interest in our engines.

That tina......WTF?

Ah; the "Shortina"

Google suggests:

"The Ford Shortina was built by a marketing company in the UK for a competition, the rules stated that the car had to be modified and had to pass an m.o.t and the end of the competition.

The car was an immaculate for cortina mk 2 1300 deluxe which had just 50k on the clock and one owner, the car is flawless and there are no give-away signs that it has been shortened only that it looks like it has,the welds are seamless and the workman-ship deserves a medal, the doors are the front and back doors pieced together with the hinge at the front and the locking device at the back with a new interior door card ,the hand-brake has been relocated and the driveshaft shortened, from wheel to wheel she is shorter than a mini,i have driven this car to shows everywhere and it gets more attention than a ferrari!!! fact!!! it drives great and can turn in its own circle....it is wax-oiled underneath and you could eat your dinner in the engine bay,i dont think i will ever sell it,at the time of putting it on www.clasiccarsales.ie i had 7 other vehicles and im glad i decided to keep it....(by the way it won the competition) the company went bust and i bought the car on e-bay for £1200,the owner said the paint cost that much, but it had to sell.....it was on english plates at the time but now its 69 LH 505 ....the end"

The Kadett was a stunner - Here's the arse:

Fab pics!  Makes a change to see some unusual cars without being bogged down by Sherpa coupes.

Is that really Ted's Cortina?

Unfortunately not - It's been lost in the annals of time.

It was on old black County Laois plates, and the suggestion is that it was imported from the North as a government car in a previous life. It probably went back to the props company after the show finished, and I can't see them preserving it (It was a bit of a shed...)

That said, apparently there's a unit in Kildare with a load of old prop cars from Irish TV shows, so you never know...!

Sure the same applies to the other cars from the show...?

Some great cars there, I fancy that orange Lada (?) estate with the white walls, it looks lovely!

1970 or 71 Ford Thunderbird, I believe.

So it is, thanks Sandie.  I had no idea they made a 4-door TBird, and from the heroic ugliness I was thinking Pontiac, Buick or possibly Chrysler.  Every day's a school day.

Now added to bucket list, obviously.
