Toyota Celica eye watering OEM Parts issue

My Dad's 2003 Gen7 Celica has had consistant problems with brakes sticking on. He took it in and found that one of the calipers is totally shagged.

This is okay you can get ones on ebay for 70 quid however it turns out the backplates have also completely disolved, which is now and MOT requirement so I hear.

A quick call to Toyota and he finds out the rear back plates are, get this £270+vat each! Yes 270 quid for a bit of pressed metal about 10 inches sq.

After he'd been given some smelling salts and regained consciousness he phone me and asked if I could look on that internet thing to see if I could find any.

The only thing I can dig up is a set of rear hubs with back plates for £20 each on rbay with the ominous line "back plates may have rust on them" in the advert, which could be code for "these backplates have more holes than a box of Aeros". Obviously it'd be better to get new ones if possible but not at £270 quid each

Eurocar farts and gsf have turned up a blank. Any know of a toyota specialist or old skool factors that might have these and be willing to deliver?

By backplates you mean the splash shield behind the caliper carrier?

Yes those things. I believe they're becoming mandatory for the mot in the not too distant future if not now also I think the handbrake shoes might mount to them.

I bought a set of these for my 3 series from BMW and they cost  £25 each. I think 10 times that could be seen as being on the unreasonable side.

saw that and wtf but looking at the shape of them but still 120 isnt cheap but you might have to .......

not like you could just make some fit off a rav or an earlier celica.....

some ebay jokers are asking 300+ a side ffs

Posted

Typically they only have one side. I can't see him wanting to pay that mind you even though they're half price. I recon the 2nd hand rusty ones seem like more of an option.

My neighbour had similar issues with his 1999 Toyota Picnic. Splash shields were rusted away to almost nothing, and no-one had any new ones. We got slightly less knackered ones from a breaker and Hammerited the hell out of them.

Some cars don't have these bits of tin at all. I removed them from my Toyota MR2 last year before the MOT and no comment was made.

MR2 rear calipers with the handbrake function are pretty useless and hundreds of pounds from Toyota. About £90 to get them rebuilt. Worth looking out for re-builders who use stainless steel pistons.

I think every car I've had has had the back plates in an advanced dissolved stage. Worst is trying to remove the bolt/screw holding them on. Always seized.

They should make a universal one out of plastic or stainless steel.

Posted

Aye they're a nightmare and are normally covered in rusty tetanus enducing sharp edges. All the hanbrake mech on the 3 series is mounted to it too so once it starts to rot your handbrake goes ping as well.

You could do an online scrappy search. They prolly know these are made of gold n diamond though.

I've just bought the 2nd hand back plates and 2 rear calipers. I've told him to wire brush and paint them so hopefully they'll not fall to bits when he does it.

I love that my entire same-year celica cost me less than Toyota want for a pair of backplates.

This is a disc shield: not essential for brake operation or for MOT BUT if rotten or loose would be a fail. No fail if not fitted.

This is a brake backplate: essential for MOT because it carries brake parts.

This is my interpretation. Any ideas? Have I been lucky with the MOT tester and cars without the tin thing?

The last MOT I attended with the BX went fine, but on the way home a frilly rear disc shield dropped off and clattered down the road after me! Jack the Test hadn't mentioned it at all. He'd maybe given it a wiggle though...

Essential bits of brakes are attached to it on this  so they need to be there. I spoke to him tonight and the guy I bought the 2nd hand one off can't send them until Friday. The guy doing the work on the car goes away away on holiday on Saturday for 2 weeks. At least itll give him time to paint the back plates.

270 for a brake backplate is extraordinary. Next time I read about the yanks sueing Toyota after tipping a 2l cup of coffee in their lap and crashing I'll feel like some sort of Karma is at work instead of despairing at US fuckwits.

Posted

What's attached to it?

Dunno, essential bits.

This is it the plate it's not just a plain pressing.

Not met one of those combined doo-dahs before. Is it one of those arrangements with the little drum brake handbrake?

Toymota parts prices are realy greedy.

Posted

Toyota parts can be an OK price but a lot are very dear. I priced up for a lot of body panels to repair a Prius and it was loads of money. I then priced the same parts on an American Toyota parts web site that I found.  It came out around half the price. I think Toyota like every one, are just working on the rip off Britain and 20% Vat does not help.

20% VAT really annoys me. What "added value" do I get for having to fork 20% extra straight to the treasury?
