lovejoy Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Gentlemen - do any of you wise men have any knowledge / experience of dealing with this company?http://www.cutmaplesalvage.com/used-cars they seem to have some very reasonable deals on offer, I am interested in one old dog that is on their site, but wondered if they are to be avoided at all costs, on the face of it, they seem pukka, just that most vehicles are not good to just "drive away", and they do not get involved in anyrepairs, mot's or arranging tax - am I expecting too much for my hard earned wonga ???.... discuss .....
Junkman Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Cut Maple is the Harter family business, run by dad Tony and son Daniel.Daughter Lisa is married to Andy Smith, hence his Stockcar F1 was sponsored by them.
lisbon_road Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 It says all vehicles are write offs and category B, C or D. You might know all about them; if you don't: I have owned loads and sold them, but legally you are supposed (like they do) to declare this and tell your insurance company. Some won't insure, others don't mind, sadly more of the former these days. I would really really inspect them carefully. Cat D might have no damage at all and cat C could be only lightly damaged.
Cavcraft Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 First on their list is a 2000 Honda Accord with damage that's actually more than you could buy an undamaged one for. So that's out. Second on their list is a Golf GTI with damage that's more than you could buy an undamaged one for. So that's out. Third is the A4, substantially twatted to the nearside, repairs would cost more than the car's worth, so that's out.# Fourth is the A4 TDi estate that looks to have had previous damage (wings/bonnet look off colour to me) that's more than it's worth. So that's out. Fifth is the stolen recovered Jeep that's more than an unrecorded, unstolen, undamaged one would cost. That's as far as I got, it seemed pretty pointless to carry on looking. from a financial point of view. Vince70, Micrashed and Sigmund Fraud 3
Partridge Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 That Accord is on AutoTrader as well, you can buy an identical but MINTOLA one for 200 quid extra.
Felly Magic Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 They are making it harder & harder to put cars like this back on the road, with more and more expensive red tape, so in the end you could very easily put a tidy one on the road for little more.
lisbon_road Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 If you don't mind me asking, what have you got in mind by 'more and more expensive red tape?' I have done a few in the past with a friend who is a panel beater/painter and had no real problems. VIC inspections, new MOTs, and once I had to arrange an insurance inspection. I normally keep plenty of photos to show any purchaser as generally there has been little damage - not always mind. Can be hard to insure though - and the most outrageous part seems to me that you are obliged to tell the insurance company and any purchaser that the car has been written off, but the insurance companies do not always check the register prior to accepting the car for insurance. But if you have an accident, they suddenly are able to. That's my understanding anyway.
Partridge Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I looked into getting a Cat D write off, but most insurance companies won't touch them or rack up the quotes for one. If my Merc gets written off I won't buy it back, chances are it will be too expensive to insure.
lisbon_road Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Direct Line refused insurance on one we had done, a Mk3 Astra that we had sold to a friend. I can't remember the full story but I had it inspected by a licenced insurance inspection company for £150 and a report was written and all was well. He seemed to do a pretty cursory inspection to me mind. There was nothing wrong with the car though. So I would not be too concerned - if you want to keep a car badly enough, it can all be sorted out.
Partridge Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 If it's a car you've restored and feel attached to, then fair enough. But with the euro boxes I drive, there's no point in paying extra when I can go on ebay and buy one just like it.
ShiteRider Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 My fiesta is a cat C, i replaced the bent back axle for £40, the it was just a case of MOT, VIC check (you'll get a new v5 as part of the check, if it's a cat d and there's no v5 you'll have to fill out a v62) and tax.The car was worth bridge money, but so far i've had 9,000 trouble free miles from it.
lovejoy Posted March 25, 2014 Author Posted March 25, 2014 Well ! Accord -ing to Our Saviour, none of the ones listed on their site are worth thinking about !so what about the blue Celica for £995 - can you buy a straighter one for less anywhere - looks good to me... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-CELICA-1-8-VVT-i-6-BLUE-METALLIC-BLACK-LEATHER-CLIMATE-AIRCON-DRIVES-WELL-/321348048622?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4ad1d616ee(polishes bifocals again with 800 grade we 'n dry paper....)thanks anyway for all the input, specially Junkoman who enlightened me on their racing sidelines - cheers
catsinthewelder Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Like this one http://autoshite.com/topic/16302-%C2%A3200-celica-logistical-shitemare-thread/ Admittedly not a deal you could pull off every day
Lacquer Peel Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 http://www.cutmaplesalvage.com/used-cars/ford-focus-halstead-201311019601493 £2995.
lisbon_road Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 How come they have so many LHD cars? Is it worth importing write offs now? I thought that only happened in Eastern Europe.

If you'd have read further, you'd have noticed that the tenth is a Ford Focus that's been stolen recovered and substantially costs more than an unstolen and unrecovered one.
Jim Bergerac Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 That Focus is US spec. Why it is for sale for so much is something I can't answer, though.
