VDO Dayton stereos any good ?

Hi I'm not really into all this ice stereo stuff but I wonder if anyone has any experience of VDO Dayton stereos..

The thing is I have quite a modern stereo in one of my old barges but the thing keeps cutting out and I have this stereo knocking about in the loft which looks ok with the name VDO Dayton on it and plan on using it if it's any good..

It's just I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to stereos and don't want the hassle of wiring in a new stereo if it's a badly made Chinese stereo which will pack up again after a couple of months as I would rather go on eBay and find something older which looks the age of the car and preferably with a good sound quality along the lines of an old pioneer, blaupunkt, kenwood etc..

Does anyone know if a VDO Dayton is any good..

I thought VDO Dayton was normally marketed to Porsche drivers. I don't known if they do budget too but I've always associated it with quality.

Bang the model number into EBay and see what people will pay but I bet it's better than a Goodmans or a Wharfdale (which is now an Argos brand)

VDO made some of the gauges for VAG  - they also made some radios for MGR / Vauxhall etc

VDO now specialise in the LGV/PCV sector (VDO Kienzle), and seem to be the market leader in digi tachos

The VDO radio/cassette that came with my Rover 25 was utter shit, and never worked properly from day 1. Charles Hurst Rover told me it wasn't part of the warranty, either. My mate's new Rover 45 came with a VDO CD Player, and it was ballix too.

The VDO unit that was fitted to my BMC motor destroyed several CD's tbh as well, it was pants

Thanks for the info I'm not too sure it will look right in a 22 year old Audi ..

I've got to admit the buttons feel a bit cheap to push that's why I thought it maybe a cheap stereo and I guess if rover decided to use them after project drive they must of been quite a cheap unit..

I actually have those old VDO gauges in my car at the moment but I can't find much info on the head unit so I guess VDO Dayton have given up making stereos..

Here's what it looks like.post-9282-0-14803800-1394822642_thumb.jpg

Some mid-late 90s VAGSHITE came with Panasonic head units that made an INFURIATING beepbop beepbop beepbop every time you turned off the ignition. I punched the one in my company Golf GiTTDi. Didn't shut the fucker up.

I think some VDO stuff was fitted to the Isuzu Trooper in the early '00's. Yes, the days of that hateful 3.0 diesel lump. Probably junk.

I think they were the original pioneers of car sat-navs, before Tom Tom, Garmin, etc came along. Don't know much else about them though, I'm afraid.

I was a VAG salesman in the mid 90s. The beepbop stereo was normally a Sony unit, often with that stupid bass switch thing.
