Just how much pain could a cheap MGB GT Be?

It's currently in Germany, near Frankfurt.

Propulsion is courtesy of an Essex V6 (that's all I muster to care about it and even this is quite an effort) with tubular manifolds, through a four speed manual (yech) gearbox without overdrive. It has Scimitar rocker covers etc etc, so it is assumed the engine is original.

It does need some work, but was driven to where it is now without any incidents.

It's been in dry storage (German style, which means, there is no leaking roof and the garage hasn't collapsed around the car), but a recent attempt by his widow to start it was not crowned with success. I daresay it wouldn't have either had my beloved wife tried it, but please note that I'm not suggesting there isn't the one woman in a million who could get it to run.

The owner really is recently deceased and it is unknown what work he carried out while he owned the car, but it appears the brakes have been overhauled and some front suspension components were changed.

The car generally isn't bad and actually almost passed a TÜV, I assume the brakes, some ball joints, and the track rod ends, were the only things it failed on. It had left here with an almost fresh MoT.

It has a very, very nice interior, not the usual rubbish. The car seems to be generally quite unmolested.

The howmuchness should be in the neighborhood of 2 bags in Greek currency.

Re Scimitar:  The man foom Yorkshire he say no, owing to undue amounts of German shitemobiles on his case at the moment, all clamouring for his attention.

If anyone else wants to risk it and wants Broadsword calling Danny Boy style rescue adventures, I might be persuadable, and also have a car that can tow, although not a suitable trailer.

2 ½ years ago while looking at a too far gone Mercedes 280CE in a garage my wife spotted a yellow MGB GT for £800 with 10 months MOT and suggested we have that. A bit of research showed for just a bit more we could have a car that didn’t look like it had been sprayed with a vacuum cleaner so the search was on, a couple of near misses and I told a friend that what I really wanted was a tax free, B GT in a nice colour with chrome bumpers a webaster sunroof and overdrive for around my budget of £1000, instead of laughing he said like the one on this weeks local paper! First thing next morning I set the process in motion and bought it.

So what has it cost over the 2 ½ years and handful of miles? It is still a solid car with just minor signs of rust at the wing joints and the paint is still flat but none of that has stopped me polishing it up for a show. The main cost has been the rear main oil seal leaked onto the clutch and I have had to have that sorted along with a new arm on the heater and unblocking the heater from self destructing foam. I have replaced the two 6v batteries with a 12v one, I have also had it serviced, a new sunroof cover fitted and would guess I have spent around £1200 on it. Fortunately I bought the car for only £800 knowing the clutch could be made to slip so in the end with the rise in value I think it is worth about what I have paid in total. I have now been asked if I want to sell it, I hardly use it but I managed to pick the very car I wanted so maybe I should keep hold of it in spite of ridicule from some about pipe and flat cap!

Might s'avérer difficile, si le vendeur can't parle anglais nor allemand.

Hey J Man, you are a Euro dude, albeit not a French one, but you've knocked abaaaaht a bit, I fancy.  Have you (or has anyone else here, please) any idea of how much of a world of bureaucratic terror and industrial quality bollock ache  is involved in buying a French shed that has no carte grise (ie no registration document) and getting it to the UK in order to do actual driving and shiz. That 504 is well cheapo, but it may of course be utterly gefooked, and, as the French mec says, is sans carte grise.

Not a problem as long as you have a document of the sale, i.e. a contract.
You have to register it in England anyway, whether it has French paperwork, or not.

Drat!  You were supposed to say "Don't even go there, man; it's, like, 27 years in the Cour de Cassation before they'll even give you a maybe.  You'd get a quicker result and be less grumpy by tunneling out of the Cheateau d'If with a spoon."

Arse.  Now I am on the internetz looking at trailer rentals.  Fuck.   I fucking hate Autoshite.

Get a GT6!  Waaaaaaay better, waaaaaaay rarer, waaaaaaaaaay cooler.   OK, hard to find one that is not knacked fer cheap, but have a look?

Agreed.  I had a Mk3 for a few years and it was great fun to own and drive. I think a decent one may be out of your range but worth a try.  Try the TSSC website?

Trailer rental is not expensive and if you do it now you can still get the off season fares for the ferries.

You know you owe yourself a piece of Franco-Italian elegance in your life and it's a fact that the oily bits are designed to survive the most laissez faire attitude towards maintenance unscathed. Plus, there is no rust in France.

So WCPGW?

With these bodywork is everything.  If you can find a complete rust free one with borked mechanicals then that is definitely the way to go.

You can even drop an Indenor in there easy enough.

As I understand it, Case Law governs the application of the law to subsequent cases?

ergo, by being a lawist duuuude, you are duty bound to trial this fine motah sur la incontinant pour benefit of the wider voituremerde monde!

See, anywhere else the rubberised ones get rejected, or converted. I think I'm with junkman..... Much better looking!

Rubbabumpaz iz 4 winnaz. The Autoshite way would be to get one that's as late as possible.

So late that its an MG Metro.

I don't hate rubber bumpers but I do wish they'd done a better job implementing them. This area around the rear lights is amateurish. It looks like the wrong lights have been bodged on.

I don't have that problem one little bit.

If you'd done yanks like I did for a quarter century, you consider this a tight fit.

Isn't that just so it can move without taking out the tail light lens?

If you want to see a proper half-arsed job look no further than the Marina Estate and its "that'll do" tailgate.
