merc e300 injectors? how bad to change?

Recommended Posts

Been offered an e300 turbo diesel avantguard 110k with leather for £500, only problem he says is its noisy.... a diesel knock caused by injector/injectors going wrong. Are these easy enough to change or are they prone to welding themselves in like some others? What else could be causing it to sound like a bag of spanners?

Sure it's not got petrol in it? Smoking, knocking and running like a bag of shite was what my old smart diesel (merc engine) did when I found out had a 50 50 diesel petrol mix in the tank.

You sprat wd40 down the side of them it can help you can also get a special tool that's like a slide hammer that pulls them out. Prepare for a war though .

Apparently it is getting to be such a problem that there are firms with hydraulic equipment that go to workshops purely to remove the things - this is the result of two dissimilar metals in close proximity to one and other.

We want vehicles that give 50+mpg,speeds of 130 mph that can seat 5 in comfort. The price of this is complexity and all the ball ache that goes with it.

To be honest, a monkey isn't really that fantastic for something that's borked (and it sounds like this is heading to Completely Borked City) unless it's a Maserati. And this isn't a Maserati. It's a Mercedes.

You can probably find something less broken for not much more folding stuff. Just my tuppence worth...

Those things can entire days to do their job if it's really seized! I kid you not!

A chap I was talking to had major ballache getting the injectors out of a TDV6 Disco. Having successfully done so, he moved on to the glow plugs. All of which snapped. Body OFF time.

Re the OP's question: I tried (and ultimately failed) to get a duff injector out of my mate's old Viano. It wouldn't budge. The bloke we took it to had one of the slidey affairs to which Cort refers.

Apparently injectors that push in and are held in rather than those that are threaded and screw in are the ones that corrode like fuck and won't come out??? Maybe it's a monkey for a reason....

There are about 4.97 quadzillion Dizzler Benzes for half a ton out there, that run like a dream and will so for the next 30 years and/or 780000 miles, so why bother with this pile of shit?

The thing is if the cars too old for diagnostic software how do you know what ones duff without pulling them all? Also the going rate for refurbing the injectors on my smart was 175 quid each! I managed to get a used set off eBay luckily.

I'd avoid if I was you.

In fact, for half a ton, there are about 8.23 furrillion nice cars out there. Check Ebay tat thread.

okay so maybe I'll give this one a miss. I need a £500 big motor, 4x4 or estate, diesel with tow bar. Must be taxed and tested and in the north west??? Thanks for saving me a headache

I think you can use an oscilloscope. I believe Scary knows how to do this.

You can always try this to get them out.

Dizzer and towbar and MOT for 500 is tough. On gumtree there is a petrol frontera in Pemberton with a towbar and 12 months MOT for 550 which could be got for 500 if your any good at waving notes under noses.

I don't think the Fronteras are that bad in reality. But the diesels do rattle like a skeleton falling down the stairs in a filing cabinet while having a wank.

done this several times fixing black death issues on merc engines.

The injectors are dropped in and are held in place with clamps. You need the right tools to do this - Laser make a quality injector puller for this job, it's not cheap but it works very well. remember to remove the rocker cover before you pull the injectors out or the foot of the injector will go through the rocker cover.

You will need to get an injector seal replacement kit as well.

Lots of advice on how to do this online, give me a ring if you get stuck.

Job will take you about 4-5 hours working methodically, don;t rush it or you are likely to drop something small in one of the cylinders.
