did the post office scan the barcode on the V5 and give you a receipt for the £0 tax? if not then they fucked up, they should also stamp the V5 with their mark, but the main thing is the £0 receipt

if you continue to have issue with the post office you can also do it yourself via V10 form

Did they give you a receipt for the free road tax when you submitted the V112 form and your V5?

No receipt, so I think that's the problem! I heard them talking about changing something to historic, but when they came back to me I asked whether it was now 'taxed' or still SORN. They said I would need to wait until my V5 came back from the DVLA before I could tax it...

Good to know I can do it myself, although I'm now missing the front sheet of my V5! I should have a photo of it though, if I need the 11 digit reference.

I hadn't been to a post office for years to do anything with my car documentation so I wasn't really sure what to do. At least they didn't ask for an MoT certificate (my MoT place doesn't issue them anymore).

I think you fill in the V112 form then give it them with the V5 (once its returned to you). They ask how much tax you want so obviously 12 months then they send the two forms off. Presumably the V112 has gone astray.

I filled in the V112, but she was clear in that what she did wouldn't change the taxation status of the car, that I would have to do that once I got the V5 back!

The way you describe makes more sense though, otherwise why the need to see the V112 MOT exemption form?

EDIT - weirdly though, it's now showing as taxed, so must have been changed to historic as I didn't pay anything!

if you check the taxation rates with the 11 digit number of the V5, what does it report?

Do an online check to see whether a new V5 has been issued in the last few days, if it has then it should have been updated and you’ll get a new hard copy in the post.

April 2012 was the last V5, so it's as if I've got a year's free road tax but the system hasn't been updated to reflect this!
