this was our old one, stank of horse shite (the misses has 2 horse) and i refused to put the kids in it  used to have a nice blue interior by the time the misses finished with it, it was more dirty, browny blue :x

and she want me to get her a nice car

I do like them. We wanted a Savanna but couldn't afford one so ended up having to buy a Pug 505 GR instead.

Funny - would be the other way round these days!

I'd love one of these with the mechanicals of the 21 turbo slotted in - that would piss off a few V6 Audi estate owners!

KOOL. I remember when these things came out, I thought they were the cat's sack. Don't think they were giving good deals on them, hence why my folks finished up with a beige Montego wagon instead.

I know. We ended up selling the 505 for just £120 as the big ends went. We couldn't be without a car and we had nowhere to store the 505 while we repaired it. Gutted to say the least.

I only recently became aware of the value of 505s for export. When mine failed the MOT a few years back I gave it to the tester in lieu of the test fee! He must have been over the moon!

^sorry for the Pug diversion. So - back to the R21 Mr VWP - I've often looked at these as a possible lugger - what's caused yours to be so expensive to keep running and is it a common problem? Ta!

Posted

brought the car for a grand (euros) last year.. failed CT on front brake pipes and pads, didnt have the tile to do it, cost 250 euros  common prob.. ;)

next the rear bearing went, screw the rear drums/pads etc cost 600euros  bearing going common, rest to go at same time unusal..

getting immobilsier fixed/removed, getting wiper stalk to work, replace heater panel cost 200e french plastic crap..common problem..

next tyres... quote 450e....another common problems..

but saying that we have already put 20,000 kms on its clock (now on 200,000kms)

its a 2.1 non turbo Diesel normally gets between 1000 and 1200kms a tank

other bits failed and replaced, clock bulbs, did myself took bloody hours..but looks good, replaced diesel pump (common problem)

stereo pikey seller took it out.. so installed another, fitted seat belt in rear as they wernt there, fixed rear wiper motor,

things needing to be done, re-hang front bumper or get a new one, get sills welded up, get another rear door sans corrosion rather than fill the problem.. or sell it and buy a cheap Audi 80 Estate 1.9 TDI, can be had for a grand, good build quality etc etc etc, i dont mind driving 'shite' but could without the misses ringing saying she needs a tow again

That just sounds like general wear and tear! Can't really complain about having to replace the tyres.

£300, fitted, balanced, tracked etc, probably not far off (not that I would ever pay that). Pity the fools with the new car.... chap at work wanted new rubber for his 2007 Volvo S40..... £800 thankyouplease. Ouch.

Jeez France sounds a bloody expensive place. I take it that you cannot buy second hand tyres from a breakers then ?

Posted

I've just had 3 195x15s fitted to the 25, all in, for £40 each!

Posted

can get from breakers yeah but not for her car...

Sounds like one of those cars that just wears you down with an endless stream of annoying faults - just painful.

Just come back from a week in France and seen quite a few 21s about. Crossed my mind a few times last week that a 21 Savannah would make a seriously useful tool.
