Any Interest in a Poorly 944?

I admit it - I ballsed up. Seemed like a good idea at the time but I can't be bothered now and just want something that works. Haven't had the V5 back in my name yet so haven't put it up for sale anywhere else, but I want shot to free the room for something else.

Good points:

Straight body

11 Months MOT with one advisory

Leather seats

Some history

Recent service

Starts, drives and stops

Clifford alarm

You can tell people you own a Porsche

Bad points

Looks like the head gasket is on the way out since there's mayo in the header tank and white smoke when driving. Still starts and blows hot air so it's not terminal as of yet. Haven't done a compression test as to be honest I can't be bothered with anything more than turning a key and driving at the moment

Windows, blower motor and rev counter dont work

Driver's door lock is jammed so you need to get in through the passenger side

Needs general tidying

Anyone?

I shouldn't ask really with all the other projects I have got kicking around but how much ????

Posted

Out of curiosity, I checked the price of a headgasket set for one of those... OUCH ! No VW LT part prices here...

Posted

Ideally I'd like 500 for it. Have been told the headgasket was done fairly recently and it may just be the oiler cooler seals, but all I have is the last owner's word on it

Mmmmmm tempting I don't suppose you would be interested in a bit of a deal on a '94 Renault 5 campus. Low miles loads of mot and tax. I have used it as a courtesy car so well looked after. I do need to fit a new rear exhaust though as it keeps chucking its guts out everywhere. I am also looking for around 650 would be a bit of cash my way .

Posted

Possibly, although my latest brilliant* plan is to sell both cars and buy one big engined barge for the winter. Do you have any pictures?

Posted

I have been trying to find a pic of the 5 but all I could find was this.  post-5515-0-51211700-1380569977_thumb.jpg

I will take my camera into work tomorrow. It is a great little car 1.4 so pretty good on fuel I think its on 48000 got a little rust around the base of the screen but is very solid and passed with no advisories. Not much of a barge but good fun even if it is a renault. It's much better than the '03 megane I have been running around

I'd love one of those, but unless you fancy a trip back into Ax land, I don't think I'm in a position to offer, I've managed to increase the fleet again, so even with the outgoing pispatch, I'm at 3.

Every chance it may be the oil cooler seals tbh. A known weak point on early 944's..

Doubt that would cause the 'white smoke' from the exhaust though....

Agreed.

Negative Creep, is the oil clean or is it turning like one of them fancy Starbucks coffees ?

Hmm, maybe the sign on that door isn't so apt? Having looked in to it a bit more it does appear to be the oil cooler since there's only light mayo on the oil cap, which looks like condensation, and it is blowing hot. So hopefully the news isn't too bad, but the offer still stands as I'd rather just get rid and enact my brilliant* idea of getting a big engine barge. For that reason I'm afraid I'll have to pass on the offer of the 5 or AX since I'd only be trying to sell them straight away

I might still be interested just waiting to here back about a renault 25 diesel in france if that doesn't come off I am sure a 944 would be the next best thing

Posted

That's oh so very tempting!

I really, really really shouldn't, but I don't suppose you'd consider an 820 Vitesse a big enough barge? August 2014 ticket, 135k.

It would 'benefit' from a new front pipe and cat, but I've got these coming from Cardiff in the next two weeks.

Posted

Hmmmm, must admit that does sound interesting. Where abouts are you and don't suppose you have any pics?

Posted

Well, this is how it stands right now, complete with this delightful* set of CHAVRIMZ

I also have the original 17" Vitesse 7-spokes to go with it. It was on them until about 2 months ago, but as tyres were getting low-ish (still legal guv, just not wild about 200bhp and winter), it was cheaper to buy this set of bad-boys with 6mm of rubber already installed delivered to my door than it was to buy a set of partworns. My intention had been to spend the winter giving the originals a refurb and putting new rubber on them.

A bit more of an owners thread here if you want a read.

I've put a manual boost controller to avoid the boost modulating valve  and a boost gauge (in place of the clock).

Good points:

Long MOT (Aug 14)

Tax til Jan.

Good bundle of service history

All electrics work

Fuel filler has been replaced in the past, so doesn't leak or require a ludicrously over-priced filler neck from eBay bastards.

For possibly the first time ever in a shite-ad, THE AIRCON DOES NOT NEED A REGAS. REPEAT. IT DOES NOT NEED A REGAS. The digital climate control works perfectly.

The (apparently) rare headlamp covers are in place.

Boot leak fixed.

Bad:

Very minor bubbling on the n/s/r arch

The cat rattles and the front pipe has a pin-hole.

The exhaust manifold has a tiny blow which goes away when warm.

I'm sure I'll think of more.

I'm only speculating right now Creeps - don't want to get too carried away with myself, mainly because even the faintest possibility of OMGHGMGHFMGHGMGHGF on the 944 would make me cry like a girl, and you may well decide the Vitesse isn't the one for you, but it's sparked a thought in my head I can't shift right now.

I can get better pictures if it sounds appealing to you...

Any idea how easy the door lock is to fix? That's the biggest hurdle I can think of right now in terms of convincing the good woman at home.

Oh, and I'm nice and local.

Manchester.

Yeah.

That is a lovely car and would happily drive around in that. The door seemed fine when I first bought it and locked as normal, but now the barrell has rotated 90 degrees and won't budge through either the key or pin. I'm guessing it's going to need a new barrel, but you can still open it via the boot and passenger side for a very dignified entry system. Distance could be a slight problem though, since to be perfectly honest I don't know if I'd trust it to drive that far in its current state

Posted

Hey, that Vitesse is brilliant!

Posted

Cheers Cav - I love it, I really do.

I start a new job on Monday, which will shift my mileage from nearly 300 a week to probably less than 100 a month, so my ability to buy dramatically unsuitable cars has increased substantially. The Vitesse is perfect for me - big, fast and in great condition - but the idea of a Porsche just tickles me a little.

Creep - I take it that it runs fine, you've just got a little nervous about the mayo? What's it actually like to drive?

I've got family (well, mainly dead ones actually) in Plymouth/Plympton and I could persuade the Woman to accompany me on a shite adventure, but I guess only if it seems likely to complete the 5 hours back.

Let me have a think. If you sell it before I stop thinking, ne'er mind - there'll be another.

Posted

It drives ok, but if it is OMG HGF I wouldn't want it to conk out and warp the head somewhere near Bristol and necessitate a long tow back. Or if there was breakdown cover perhaps it could conveniently break down at the end of the road and need a flatbed to get it back? I'll put it on the blue forum but I'm guessing until the v5 turns up that may put people off

Posted

Here is an idea I have got to go from taunton to manchester next week with an empty trailer is that any help to any one. A diesel contribution would be nice though

Posted

Hey Pan,

Nice offer and would solve a couple of problems, but probably not the biggest - I can't really take on a car which wobbles that closely to broked.

Cheers for the offer though.

Posted

Supposed to have someone come view it tonight but never showed. SHOCK HORROR.

Posted

It's ok, I've sold enough cars to know that you only ever arrange a viewing when I'd be at home doing nothing. Would put it on ebay now but think the V5 thing will put people off

Not sure if this is still available, but if so am up for putting in a cheeky bid. Obviously it is t'other end of the country from me so would need to factor in Shitly etc. Or risking driving it back with breakdown cover.

Posted

Someone is supposed to be coming down and collecting it tomorrow, but if they turn out to be another time waster I'll certainly let you know

Posted

Ok. Thank you. Good luck!

Cheeky bid was £400 btw.

Posted

I'll keep the thread updated but £400 is too cheeky I'm afraid

Posted

Wow, the latest buyer turned out to be another no show timewaster. Who would have guessed?

Posted

I feel your pain Neg'. I'm currently trying to shift a very decent, everyday motor and I have had three people call me, arrange a time to view only to dissappear into thin air without so much of a call/ text/ email.

Thats three mobile numbers I'll simply have to plaster all over t'internet.
