My neighbour Graham has MOTed a Citroen AX 1.0 Spree for a friend of his, so her daughter could have it but now wants to sell it instead. It has done 98,000 miles, 10 months MOT and they want £299 for it. It has lacquer peeling on the roof and bonnet but I am told it drive well. The car is at my next-door neighbours house and we live just outside the town of Buckingham.

A wee 1996/7 1 litre for 3 ton. With test. That is the perfect winter beater. It'll run on the sniff of petrol too. Bargain.

Lankytim is also selling one of these, you could start your own AX owners club!

What does one of these weigh? They must be one of the lightest high-volume metal cars out there.

690kg, according to the handbook.  Some of the bodywork is plastic though.

Love these, yes the bodywork is ridiculously flimsy but that's all part of the charm.  The tailgate is a piece of flat glass with a chunk of plastic bolted to it (I wanted a cycle carrier for mine but they were all sold with a disclaimer saying "Unsuitable for Citroen AX" - presumably because the weight of a mountain bike would make the tailgate snap in half).  They dent like crisp packets too but are dirt cheap to run and don't actually seem to rust all that much.

Because of the light weight they're pretty capable even with the 954cc engine - mile would happily buzz along at 80 on the motorway.  They're bloody good in the snow too.

My Panda 1000 was friggin ace in the snow too - wheel arches made out of gaffa just meant MOAR WEYT SAVING.

Anyway, back on topic - that's a snip. If I hadn't binned my Mk1 MR2 because motorway journeys in something so spindly terrified me, that'd be back here now replacing the missus' 206.

Never tried it in the snow but when pushed, my 1.0i Debut topped out at a frantic 85mph on the motorway - then again, it wasn't in the best of health.  80 was achievable though.  I do miss being able to fill the tank for £35 and getting an entire week's worth of work and college trips out of it.  Mine made it to 120k-ish miles before it died completely at the hands of its new owner but it had been seriously neglected and abused for most of its life and suffered a bodged HG replacement in my ownership.
