Oh yeah, I had forgotten about the collection thread. Ok, I'll do one.

 

Might be fun because I'm going to try to do it whilst my kids are in school so that I don't have to take them. I'm going to put them on the school bus, then drive to the station, go to Bath, pick up the car, find a post office, tax it, and then drive back before my kids get back from school otherwise all hell will break loose. Time-wise there's not a great deal of margin for error but these W124 buses are pretty sound right? And there must be plenty of tax disc issuing post offices in Bath no doubt. What could possibly go wrong?

Xantias are great and far more reliable than any 124s I've ever had. Almost as well put together, too. Just make sure the aux belt tensioner and cambelt are right. Beyond the easy-peasy sphere changes, I detest working on anything Peugeot - which is why I have an C4 A6. They're huge, so simple and so tough - the opposite of what followed. All of them are economical for their size. The 5 pot dizzlers with 6 gears are very fast. But they can rot, despite galv bodies. I've seen many more rusting A6s (not just front wings) than Xantias.

 

The appeal of the 124 is their abilities to soothe the driver on long journeys, almost to the point of a Cit CX. And with one of/the loveliest inline 6 diesel ever made. Just buy at least one for spares and find one which has lived near a motorway, not at the end of 30 miles of poor roads,

 

I've just bought another, it has gone through parts like nothing else. I put this down to its owner of the last seven years - she didn't have much mechanical sympathy. Which they need if they're to be cheap to run.
