Poverty Mk4s tend to hold their price. A 1.6 (or even 1.4) 'S' model in a sensible colour will now look like a good investment for someone, but a really poor buy. For really not much more you see all sorts of rare but thirsty so unloved models. There was a Y-plate V6 4Motion for £1500 near me a while back and it hung around for ages, unused at the side of the road - they'd have undoubtedly taken offers. Probably due to it having the same MPG as a Range Rover, but none of the attractiveness.

They came with a bizarre mix of engines, each with frightening service bills - both V5 and V6 were on offer. These seemed to attract yobs like a poo sprinkled with sugar attracts flies, so put money on them being unserviced, unloved and thrashed. An ex-colleague had a V5 - sounded nice when it had oil in it, sounded awful when he was paying so much on petrol he couldn't afford to service it.

Just don't. Anything is a better bet. A Focus, I'd probably even have a diesel Renault automatic over a Mk4 Golf. And this is coming from someone who has owned more VWs than any other make.

For that money, as said you can get a Leon - a nice mix of Audi and VW parts but less likely to be yobbed, and far far cheaper to both buy and insure. My quotes for a 1.9TDI 110bhp Leon SE (top of the range so electric stuff, CD changer etc) came back less than half the price than a 110BHP 1.9 TDI Golf GT (same spec). £340 over £800.

Have to agree that a mk4 golf is one of the most dull cars I've ever had. Went from a 98 tdi 90 to a 240hp saab 9-5 . Much better! Astra g 2.0 dti would be a better bet than a golf , no scene tax either.

You'll need a bit extra if you go for a MK4 for the windows tinting as near black as you can get away with and some oversized Audi alloys with the Audi badges still on them then drive around like it's an R32 not a diesel. 8)

The other thing about older Golfs & Polos is that they often have lots of things wrong with them as a succession of aspirational but penniless owners have believed the OMGVWSRsooooRELIABLE shite that gets spouted all over the place and never bothered their arse servicing them.

They're quite posh looking inside but they're nothing special, I'd have a Focus over a Golf anyday.

Good point. The only reason I have a Polo is because I enherited it. It has a "long life" service plan, which means it gets serviced every two years. Worse bloody thing ever. Many people think it means "skip completely".

I had a '96 golf mk3 n/a diesel. it was a shed when I sold it 3 years ago with grotty arches and sills. a workmate now owns it, still going strong on 280,000 miles. that's a winnah in my book. no they are not quick or exciting in any way, but 55 mpg (on veg) and an everlasting engine work in its favour.

MK3 GTI I think is beginning to be a nice car..... I used to think they were the most bland looking things. Got to drive a couple last year and they were quite fun and very pokey. Anything newer is totally off my radar, thus I have no opinion other than blaaa

Have heard lots of people raving about the MKIV GTTDI remap 200bhp crap

You can easily find a Good mk4 for sensible money, hell a gti mk4 can be bought for peanuts!

You are all correct.

So I changed tact last night. " My dear, if you want a golf, you can have a golf, but we may have to up our budget from shit to shed"

I laid out my masterplan and then she turned round and said "Oh, we may as well keep the meriva now"

Fuck that! You put the idea in my head, I want to do it now.

Basically, a car (especially golf knowing) work buddy came over and said to steer away from cheap mk4's for the reasons mentioned above, and because the gearbox rods or something turn to chocolate resulting in a gearbox rebuild or a new fridge. Plus, all the non leggy, diesel 53-54 plate ones are hovering around £1500.

My plan is:

Buy a shed focus (lots of nice 1.8's with about 130k around on gumtree for £400ish.

Mrs then drives shed focus for a month or so whilst I take the Meriva over to mums, shampoo the seats, clean it thoroughly, buy wheel trimz, do an oil change etc and then sell it privatly for maybe £1500. Then, buy a decenter golf. Then do a doctor on the focus and sell that, or whatever

Hopefully she will fall in love with the focus (she liked a few I showed her last night, her cries of 'but why is it so cheap' were met with 'because it's what it's worth!) and we can sell the meriva and put the cash towards a new house deposit or something. Who knows. T

he Meriva is the most expensive thing we own, so I want to get my moneys worth!

Going to slowly chip away throughout the month to see what she really wants to do, then hopefully on payday go and surprise her with a focus.

Or, she could get into a strop, decide she wants to keep the meriva forever and get in a grump, in which case I shall take my £400 and spend it on the XM to piss her off even more!

Buy a shed from B&Q and spend the rest on the XM.

My old man always used to go on about Mk4 Golfs being really bad for OMG GEARBOX FAIL, but I've no idea what his justificaton is. That said, concurrent with the above, Leons etc are much nicer.

Tell your lass to sort her own motor out, it sounds like you are going to end up with something she doesnt like no matter what you do.

The repercussions of following this advice will affect* you ultimately.
