Vince70 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I wonder if anyone could help my sister in laws old fiesta has failed the mot but only on corrosion and sailed through everything else. I've not seen the failure sheet but it sounds like the sills need sorting and it also failed on corrosion on the wheel arches both sides. I know it sounds like how long is a piece of string but how much should it cost roughly to plate up the sills and lower wheel arches. Just looking at the car it doesn't look too bad as I've seen fiestas on the road in much worse condition body wise but obviously if its going to cost hundreds to repair it won't be worth doing.

cobblers Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Depends on so many things really - do you just want them bodging up to scrape it through another test or two? or do you want a "nice job" doing? How extensive is the rust? is it either side of the sill seam? any awkward corners? are you happy with it just being undersealed over? etc. unless it's a just a couple of 6 inch square patches snotting on each sill end with some underseal spunked over with a mucky old brush you are looking well into 3 figures. Welding sills up is a really shit job.
Rusty_Rocket Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Can't tell until you see it.. but, we did two similar jobs this week, one was a K11 Micra that needed one sill end rebuilding (inner and outer inc jacking point) and the front lower crossmember doing on both sides- that bill was £270.Another was a Rover 200 that had complete outer sills on both sides which came to around the same. Should add though, we are a restoration company, no pigeon-sh*t bodges here and our repairs will (hopefully ) outlast the rest of the car, perfectly seam-welded and no overlapping panels unless original.
Vince70 Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 Thanks for the replies,I think she was expecting around the £250 mark for the repairs I don't think she is too worried if the car looks like a patchwork quilt once repaired as long as the car is repaired to a good structural standard rather than a poly filler and underseal coverup job as the car has to carry my baby nephew so it's got to be done properly. I'm going to take it along to a garage tomorrow who did a good job welding up an old car of mine.
Morgan84 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 It pays in the long term to have a decent job done, as small 'postage stamp' patches can be ok for the test, but another year later if not dealt with correctly can mean more rot and welding . Take the bad out, get some wax of oil inside with a decent plate and it should be good for a while and give the car a few more years life

I had a new front crossmember welded in, together with a rotten section of the rear valance replaced on my Corsa last year for £300 cash. Wasnt for the MOT though, but would have been soon. It was also a proper job. I remember the good old days though, when Hadrian produced any panel that you could just tack weld over the rusting original, adding some black silicone sealant 'faux-weld' to fool the MOT tester. All for about £12 per side.
