Newfangled low noise tyres

Guys,

I have a confession to make. Please don't beat me up for it, or treat me as if I was leprous. I'm really just an ordinary guy and in reality a much nicer anorak than my posts suggest, honestly.

I violated one of my regni aurei and had the Rover shod with a set of brand new rubber, in the illusion this would give me some peace of mind now with the upcoming Summer cruises for the 50 year celebration of the P6 and whatnot.

Yes, I know. We all know that that new tosh is worth nowt and I should have known better and I duly got the punishment for my wrongdoing, as if being hrmpflhundred Pounds lighter wasn't atonement enough, what with me being an avaricious geesah and stuff.

The new tyres, some Gangnam Koitus or sum such, have an imprint on the sidewalls that says 'low noise'.

I herewith imploringly conjure you to avoid such shit at all cost.

The 30 odd year old Pirelli P6es that got replaced were probably a suboptimal solution to moist roundabouts, but they did a formidable job drowning out all disturbing and alarming sounds, which are now clearly audible, they are even louder than my tinnitus.

I say, a very unsettling and traumatising experience indeed.

I knew all along that my Rover is possessed, but that there are Poltergeists living in it was hitherto unknown to me, which was a lot more appeasing.

So here is my advice:

Do not buy 'low noise' tyres! Do not just avoid them, run like fugg!

Or could the installation of a Cherry Bomb be a simple fix?

When faced with noise from the automobile, be it engine related, trim rattling or tyre noise I do as my local garage recommends  and turn the stereo up.

You may be lucky, and the tyres may quieten down a bit when they've done a few miles. then again they may not.

Some tyres generate tons of noise, but only on some cars. Wanli Teflon Ditchfinders are noisy as hell on Å koda Superbs ok on other cars.

I put Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric jobs on my car a couple of months ago, they made it a lot quieter than the Michelin Primacy jobs that were previously fitted. There's a couple of db in it according to the new label things.

A year ago I fitted Michelin Energy savers to the 406. These are sold as being lower noise than their predecessors. And true to the blurb, they are. Far quieter than the Michelin Pilot Primacy that were on there before, as well as being slightly more economical - about 0.5 mpg. Cheaper as well. The handling & grip seems fine as well. I don't drive like Lewis Hamilton and they seem as good as before.

‘Gangnam Koitus’ LOL!!!! that’s a great name for a tyre.

I had some Chinese "low noise" tyres fitted to my SD1. They were pleasantly surprising and were quieter than the Firestones that came off. Car has now gone and I cannot remember the brand.

So none of you guys is the slightest bit nervous because of all the other noises that suddenly become audible after low noise tyres are fitted?

Yeah, or Aloha Phallatio or something. Can't memorise tyre names since they priced Dunlops into Neverland.

They may calm down after a couple of hundred miles or so but don't hold your breath with far-eastern rubber.

The YingTongs on the rear of my Merc are about as low noise as a pre health & safety regs Motorhead gig on some surfaces.

I think you understood me wrong.

The new tyres are so quiet, that now all the OTHER noises can be heard, that I previously was blissfully unaware of.

I like the single 'Landsail' brand tyre on the Skoda, it's not a very promising name for a tyre really.

Ah right, fair enough. That's what the stereo's for. 8)

The only car of mine I've heard since about 1988 was my Amazon, which sounded like a Stomu Yamashta gig.

I am pretty convinced that there is some law in China making it obligatory for manufacturers of 'no-name' tyres to fill the sidewall with random imprints which advertise features that the tyre clearly doesn't have.

In the olde days, most of their tyres were marked as 'M&S', despite the fact that they were as much use in mud or snow as a pair of slippers from the homonymous store. Nowadays the tree-hugging public demands imprints like 'low noise' or 'fuel economy', even on tyres designed to fit refined* and economical* vehicles like series III Land Rovers !

God only knows what the marketing people will think next : 'reverses entropy' perhaps ?

I'm seriously considering a set of Dunlop Blueresponse on my Wife's Focus. 68dB, in comparison to the 71 of lesser manufacturers. B Economy, A grip. I think..... Suits me.

Mr Ross, I've had blueresponse on my VW boring and I quite like them. Pretty good grip (a shitload better than Goodyear Efficentgrip) and they wear about the same as most other tyres I've had on the car. I can't comment on noise as I have quite bad tinnitus and as for fuel economy I've not noticed any difference over the last 3-4 different sets of tyres on the car.

I normally run "Take offs" on it, but feel the love for it this year, as we have finished paying through the nose for it.... it belongs to us! So a set of shiny rims (Off eBay) and decent rubber would give me the "horn" where it is concerned.

I've found that every item I fix on the Princess makes another, previously unheard noise, much louder.  Presently the noisiest thing on the car are the tyres - one Kelly, 2 Roadmasters and one Euromaster - which on some roads sound like all my wheel bearings are dead or on fire or both (they're not, I've checked several times).  I also get chronic comedy low speed four tyre squeal on corners.

I'd say it's normal for your car to be noisy, it's an old brown Rover after all, they're supposed to be a bit noisy.  Get a tin of expanding foam, a tin of WD40 and a roll of gaffer tape, these three items should cure all excessively noisey components with a combination application approach.
