Good stuff! Nice to see it progressing. Spray gun looks interesting, I might be quite tempted with one of them at some point for painting the Renner Onze's nastier bits.

GR8 work! I need to find the Dutch equivalent of Mr_Bo11ox (Meneer_Ba11en) to work on the Flo.

Nice work Bollox! I too would like to hear more about this spraygun thing, you reckon it'd be good enough to do the Stanza?

The spraygun is a remarkable thing, it is made entirely out of plastic including the needle! But its got a decent weight to it and i must say it worked better than I expected. Sounds like a hoover though. It has two controls, one for adjusting the spray pattern to one of 3 options - tall thin oval, circle or short wide oval. Not much choice there so thats easy enough. The other control is a glorified screw on the back of the trigger which limits how far you can push the trigger in, thus limiting how much paint comes out - the more you push it in, the more paint you get. Even with the screw wound fully out (i.e. only pushing the trigger in a little bit) it still lobbed out loads of paint which quickly gathered into big fat runs. I just lengthened the screw by blu-tacking an M6 nut on the end of it! then you could barely get any paint out at all so I wound the screw back in till the paint came out at a manageable rate. The only other variable is the paint viscosity, I know you can get cups with holes in etc for measuring that, but I just lobbed in some thinners till it 'seemed about right' then gave it a whirl. I think theres room for me to improve my technique there.Anyway the gun is about 500 times better than a rattle can, you can get a good thickness of paint on and its quite easy to get on with. The first coat was a bit orange peely so I added extra thinners for the second coat which helped. I am looking forward to spraying a large plain area as that will be where I can really learn the subtleties of it, the drivers door bottoms and sill will get done next.As for spraying a whole car, i suppose it could be done! Though spraying a whole car with cellulose using a placca electric spraygun all starts to sound a bit '1980's Practical Motorist' to me, although thats probably just garage bigotry. Even if the finish was not as good as a professional sprayer, which it probably would not be, if you've got time to go to town on it with a polishing mop afterwards I reckon you could get a pretty decent result with this thing.

Keep the updates coming then, to be honest I can't imagine me respraying the Stanza with one, but the amount of spraying work I have to do is increasing lately - the 323 Wagon requires paint in the same sort of areas your Crab does (valance, door bottoms) so I'm very interested to see how you get on.

Good work there Mr B, that gun looks like an all-in-one version of the Earlex gun I sprayed the Avenger with (or what the Earlex would look like in B&D colours etc). Similar orangepeely effect when the paint was too thick - mine came with a viscosity cup, but the gun needs the paint to be thinner than what's recommended. So Dan, if you fancy a loan of the gun, give me a shout, I'm not far from you.

Too late for Mr B I know (and top work as always Monsieur), but Aldi often have an electric sprayer for about a tenner.I doubt it will be on a par with the Bosch one but could be worth a try before splashing out more cash.

I think "splashing" is the operative word, based on my dismal Fiat 500 painting experience

Thanks for all the added info Snr_Bo11.One thing that has always bugged me about spraying with something like this is the clean up afterwards. Do you need to get it apart? What is the process? Just shoot pure thinners through it for a bit and wipe out the paint jar?

Just to add my twopenneth, well done Mr Bowlax, good job!

Mr Coli - isn't the new colour metallic (gold)? It coped well? I only ask as my old R30 (metallic brown) is going to need some paint one of these days and there's no way I can afford to pay for a pro job.

To avoid hijacking this thread, I shall adjourn this to another - any other electric sprayer comments feel free to post there too.http://autoshite.commlm/forum/viewtopic.php?p=91818#91818

RANT TIME

Posted Image

For the first time in many weeks, I chucked a few spanners at the crab last night. This car has been responsible for e a mega lack of tat motivation recently which is forecast to continue! Its one of those cars where everything is in much worse condition than you expect. So for I have done the following:

Stacks and stacks of welding to front valance, headlamp surrounds, floorpans and inner sills, new outer sills, repaired drivers side doors and painted the lot to an average standard.

Made a pump and inflated the suspension.

rebuilt clutch hydraulics.

New engine mounts,

repaired radiator and reinstalled with new top + bottom hoses.

complete brake rebuild.

freed the seized clutch.

freed off partially-seized gear selector mechanism!

New front pipe

every time I attack a job on it I seem to end up looking at a new and bigger load of hassle. For example when I bought it, the exhaust was not blowing and looked sound enough. However when I popped the clutch free, the flexi joint went on the front pipe so I bought a new frt pipe and lobbed it on yesterday. To do that, I had to take off the rear section. DOing that revealed that it too was completely shafted and paper-thin everywhere, beyond any hope of being welded, meaning that I now have to find £120 for a new one. The brakes did not work when I got it, turns out the folowing work needed doing: New wheel cylinders, new master cylinder, rebuilt front calipers, new shoes, front hoses and assorted clevis pins/split pins. The whole lot was completely b0rked. Now it needs some new carpets (£130) and all the tyres are cracked and perished (£150 for a new set). As I am stony broke I cant see any of that lot happening super-quickly. :x

Come on man, keep your pecker up (fnar). I would like to challenge you to an ISSIGONIS-OFF when you are done.

I can feel a set of part worns coming on.......shouldn't be more than 50 quid fitted?Carpets? Sounds like £30 worth of Allied carpets offcut to me. No point in spending 300 sovs on a car worth (perhaps) £7-800? Genuine carpets and four new tyres won't add £300 to its value.

tell me about it!Tyres are 165 x 14's, bit of an oddjob.

Could 185/65/14s be 'persauded' on? Ok they're a lower profile than standard but shouldn't be much of a difference I'd have thought? Plus I have at least three here with good tread for the grand sum of eff all if you want them and I don't think I'm too far from you either.

Hey Mr B, I'm 95% sure those Sigma Wagon 5-spokes you gave me are 165/80 R14 (that's the same isn't it?). They're mixed brands but they hold air fine and they're certainly not perished/knackered. One of them is brand new with the sticker still on it.I want the tyres off anyway to refurb the wheels properly and I'm changing to a different size when that's done, so they'd be surplus to my requirements. You're welcome to em if you like, I'll get them taken off and stick them in the corner.

Aah, the old ADO71 - 18/22 route. Fat tyres on narrow rimz and 22psi for ultimate ride kwolitee.

I wouldn't be surprised if Balby Spares in Doncaster didn't have a Crab you could raid carpets from. If not - rubber matting FTW, suits the character of one of these no-nonsense motors.

That's what comes of doing things properly instead of bodging along on a wing and a prayer. :(

There's a cheap part worn tyres place in Stoke too B if you need to know where it is just shout.I think 14 inch tyres are £15 each fitted.

165/14 overall diameter =620mm185/65/14 overall diameter= 596mmtotal variation is -3.87%in other words they would be fine.though 185/70/14 = 615mm, -0.81% and are easy to come by

Just remembered ; Smiths of Bloxham (breakers near Banbury, Oxon) have a white 1973 2200.

Keep your chin up Bo11iox old fruit. Your classic saves have inspired me more than anyone so to see you getting down is a little unsettling. How about getting some of that ribbed cord carpet you can get in Carpet Right? It comes in a range of suitably shite colours and is both cheap and reasonably hard wearing! Two or three metres of that plus as I recall a flattish and none too complicated floor area should see you right.

The old Mojo has come wanging back with this car for some reason. I have just chucked £130 at a new main exhaust pipe for it, plus I have had the screen out and fixed the rot in the scuttle. New brake hoses are going on tonight plus more sealing/painting of the floor and inner wings.

Why is the mojo back? Well there are so many class cars out there for buttons and I cant do any of them while this is cluttering up the garage so I've gotta just crack on! Plus I know how ace these are to drive, in contrast to my current daily wheels (P100 truck).
