How shit are Almera Tinos?

Well you guys really delivered the goods with my Picasso question.

It seems they look like a potato (No shit, sherlock) and John F REALLY doesn't like them, but a 2.0 Hdi might just do the job.....

However Morgan84 sugested a Tino. A quick ebay trawl turned up this as an example:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-04-Nissan-Almera-Tino-2-2dCi-136ps-SE-/300863743250?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item460ce06512

Similar prices, lower mileages generally, just as ugly but in a different way, all important 3 rear seats and shirley the build quality and reliability should be a million times better than anything the french can throw together.

Any experiences or opinions?

Thank you muchley :D

Can't comment on technicalities, but as you say, its bound to be more reliable than a Picasso.

As for the important stuff: i'd say its slightly less fugly than a Picasso from outside (although more bland) but 10 times fuglier inside by the looks of it.

Family in Hebden Bridge have had a Almera Tino since new. That was 8 years ago and it gets ABUSED. Never cleaned or serviced, and it's never failed an MOT as far as I know. Plus my uncle's a massive Surrey cunt with precisely zero mechanical sympathy. If it can put up with him................

All in all, probably quite reliable - although I'd be watching out for the brown ruin on older examples.

The Tino was made at Nissan's Spanish plant just outside Barcelona

My farv inlaw has run one of these for the last 7 years after deciding a life of shite was no longer for him. He down sized from his Volvo 340 which he'd owned for since near new then decided to up size to the Tino 6 months later when I got his daughter in the club. A fine decision on his part as it's been trouble free and has wanted for nothing other than service and wear and tear parts.

I don't know if the 2.2 dCi was tweaked for going in the Nissans but it has a terrible reputation in Renaults. And I've experienced that.... Twice. In fact the general consensus is that aids is a more attractive proposition.

Surely the correct answer is to buy a Prairie?

I think the front crossmembers rust like Micra ones do.

Id have said the Citroen X-P is a better buy.

These come with more toys, but the diesels do like to shit things out of weird places.

2.0 HDi CXP wont give you as much grief as a Renault/Nissan family Diesel engine.

Sat nav's cost a million pounds to keep online, too!

I drove one around for a few days last month and I preferred it to our Meriva! Better cabin, nicer seats, pedals etc. 1.8 went OK but liked a drink, felt like it was driving on the road rather than the disconnected floaty feeling the meriva gives.

I'd recommend one, but be warned, if you fit an aftermarket stereo, it earths itself via the aerial...

Can only advise from the POV of a Nissan Almera N16. If it's a 2.2 dCi (136), check the clutch very carefully as it can be very expensive to repair. However, these are pretty robust cars that should prove reliable. Mine went straight through it's last 2 MOTs during my tenure.
