Hey you lot.

Fancy a go at it?

It last moved about three years ago.

Yes, it has the 'wrong' engine...

This belonged to my half-brother, who died a few weeks back. It is parked at his mothers house near Keighley, where the two of them lived, so out of respect, no messing please. V5 and keys present.

Access is a bit tricky for a big truck or trailer, but I'm sure the old Disco could be dragged out to the end of the lane with Anne's diesel auto one. Plenty of space for loading there.

The scrap man would drag it out for a frag at a hunnertanfiddy, but I reckon it's gotta be worth double that as a body donor..? The cheapest 'spares or repairs' projects ont'bay sold for three or so. Some muppet paid four for this well-listed* example FFS:

Oh, when I asked Anne if there was a spare wheel for it somewhere, she took me to the dunny and we dug these four out:

P1010092_zps4b857185.jpg

I'm sure they'll be LR fitment, that's all Jan ever had, but they look very tall to me. 7.50x16 from memory, and nearly new, tread wise. They'll go with the car.

Dog may also be included in sale, by negotiation. SRSLY.

So do you know anyone for it (car and/or dog), or should I stick it on a well known auction website?

Ta.

Ebay I reckon. The Mpi is not exactly popular. I imagine it'd be much like my Maverick was - entirely the wrong engine for such a heavy beast. And it's a 3-door, so that's not popular either. Definitely still has value for spares - you don't often see a very cheap Disco. Even complete mingers seem to fetch a few hundred.

Posted

Got to be worth a lot more than 150. I have a 300tdi in my yard that is a spares car. I have been offered 500 a few times for it now, the off road boys prefer the early 3 doors so there will be a good market for it. Why not try some of the L/R forums it should soon find a new home

I'd love that engine, think of the possibilities, a 2.0 16v SD1 2000, the stuff of (my) dreams!!!!

Posted

As it stands, to take away complete I would say it's worth £300 and an extra £60 for the wheels (they're weller 8 spoke steelies and only cost £20 each brand new). You'd get more if you broke it but have you got the time etc etc to do it?

The mpi was a completely useless lump in these but it might be a good donor for a tdi for someone depending on chassis condition.

I could put a link up on Landyzone if you like? new users trying to flog stuff on there will get seriously flamed.

Just realised those wheels won't fit a std height disco, so I'd defo sell them seperately.

They missed an opportunity not putting the turbo T series in these, more power than a V8 but much more efficient.

Hope you manage to shift it without any messing.

Posted

More power maybe, but not as many stump-ripping torques. That's where the V8 scores. It's about more than power, especially when shifting two tonnes of Disco. They only fitted the Mpi engine as a tax dodge for the Italians. Gawd knows why they tried foisting them on British buyers. I spent my school work experience with the Disco testing teams. Those working on the Mpi absolutely hated it.

Is this the same lump as the Bo11ox-spec R8 then?

:D Come and get it - I'm sure* it would A-frame beautifully behind a Blingo or whatever. Hell, I'd even pay your pez home if you were taking it to build a 16 valve SD1 !!!11!!1!

Thanks very much for your advice. That'd be great if you could link to this, ta!

It could be tuned for more torque easily, I think the turbo T series' torque was artificially restricted to save the barely strong enough FWD gearboxes it was attached to.

I'd have the gearbox and diffs! Oh yeah, and them 'orrible lumpy tyres..... worthless...... I'll give you a fiver for them.... cough.... you can keep the nasty wheels though.... I reckon trying to get it running would score financial merit. If it's any help, the last 200 shape Disco I bought (7 years ago) was a 5 door Tdi, for £200..... sold for £300 within a week.

Posted

It is exactly the same engine as the 220SLi, although with a unique inlet manifold for the longways installation. Brilliant for Marinas, SD1's, sherpa coupes, LDV pilots etc etc!!!

Ignoring my tongue in cheek replay above, what would you accept foe the 4 loose wheels and tyres on their own?

How does Barmatt's advised value of £60 sound?

Posted

It's a disco 1. There will be no boot floor.

boot floors only cost £45 and can be riveted in if you can't weld it as they are not structural, so long as the chassis is sound it's worth a bit of a rebuild.

Sounds like a good one. My Son In Law was asking me the other day if I could find him some tyres, and we looked on here, he asked me to ask. I shall tell him what you say, and be in touch. I'm certain he can close quickly too. Thanks.

That's all good. If he wants them, pm me your number (or his) and I'll give you/him a bell, that's probably easiest.

There's no desperate rush to be rid of them (Anne has a big old house to clear), but a simple transaction would be appreciated. Cheers.

On the Disco itself, I reckon I'll just stick it on eBay later this week and hope for the best.

If I wasn't 20 miles away from it, I'd have more of a play and see if I could get it to turn over and fire. But I am, so I won't. It'll just have to go as it is.

Posted

To prepare you for the inevitable, people are going to want to know what state the sills are (tricky to repair on the 3-door, especially around the rear wheelarch) and the boot floor. Putting a ONE LIFE LIVE IT STICKER on it and a row of unnecessary, not-even-wired-in spotlights above the windscreen will* raise the value by at least £500.

Posted

I am no fan of these things, but that is getting rare with A) that donk and B) that originality. Don't laugh, in a few years these will be worth coin, especially in three door flavour and with those awful side graphikx.

It is probably worth the stated £300 above but I would drop a line to these chaps who are trying to kick up a bit of interest in them http://www.grahambethell.com/

Thanks everyone for your advice.

The wheels are provisonally sold to Albert Ross, John F has second dibs.

The old Disco is now ont' bay, fingers crossed for minimal tosspottery.

Tyres are now in South Yorkshire. They are exactly as described, thanks for sorting this one out Joe. She's a lovely Lady. Anything I can to to help her, please let me know, I shall try.... I did offer whilst there.

Great stuff! Thank you for the update Alberto.

If anyone's interested, the old Disco sold ont'bay for £360:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281074937518

A farmer-slash-Discovery enthusiast from Harrogate bought it with the intention of putting it back on the road. He came promptly with his cash, collected it without any fuss; another top bloke.

And Anne is happy, that's the main thing. It has been a tough year for her so far. Thanks again.
