Last time a brace of Lada taxi's were seen in the UK was under Paragon Station in Hull circa 1991, no thumbs up then, just a miserable ride home.

I've been in a Logan taxi you know. Bonus points for the driver having his right arm in plaster and changing with his left. In a LHD car

 

Still doesn't top the 5 door AX taxi I used in Tunisia in the late 90's.

I once travelled from Delhi to Lucknow in a Maruti (baby suzuki) taxi. Then back via Meerut in a Tata Indicar. It was hell.

The sketchiest taxi I ever rode in was in Morocco - they were using 5 door Fiat Unos at the time, I think they weren't a million years out of production for the market at the time (circa 2003) but the car was about the most worn out I've ever been in, somehow everything felt thinner and more slight, plenty of iffy structural repairs that looked and sounded like tin-cans.

Easily the worst taxi I've ever seen was in Prague last year, a filthy and extremely battered Mk3 Fiesta, an early one at that. Given the reputation of private taxi firms in that city, I wussed out and stuck to the yellow Skoda Superbs.

Our Lada taxi ride in Prag 1995 consisted of the driver showing me a bunch of hooker calling cards and telling me all the tasty things they would do for a fistful of kroner...needless to say i only paid one fare for the ride..

We travelled 400 miles on bad roads in this (driver on right). At top speed. Allah was with us apparently despite being on Vishnu's patch.

Of all the Shatchbacks in this thread, that Clio has to be the shoddiest looking of them all, it doesn't even look finished. Would with that Kia Pride Shatchback though, I like the look of that.

Thanks for the interest shown. This was my first attempt at adding pictures - seems to have worked. I have more Bulgarian (and Spanish and Italian) tat pictures to post at some point.

 

One of Hull's largest taxi companies ran a fleet of Ladas, often seen huddled under the awful derelict 1960's "office block on stilts" that was tacked in front of Paragon station in Hull (now demolished allowing the station to revert to it's much more pleasant original shape). At one point the taxi licencing office threatened to ban Ladas as taxis due to the bad image it gave the city....this was Hull in Thatchers Britain, I think there was a little more than just taxis threatening Hull's image.

 

It was pointed out to them that as Lada's were imported through Hull docks, and where prep'd at Carnaby near Brid (about 20 miles away) they actually contributed greatly to the local economy and "banning" them could well be seen as "shooting oneself in the foot". The idea was abandoned.
