Timing belt/balance belt whine. 944. Now sorted!

Had the timing and balance shaft belts replaced recently on my 944, snag is there is now a loud whining noise coming from the belt area! In all fairness to the local garage that did the job they are trying to sort it. They have tried replacing idlers, pulleys and re tensioned both belts but the noise remains. Currently trying a new water pump. They are great, and don't charge for stuff that doesn't fix the problem, but are struggling! Any ideas? Suspect they are getting fed up with the car by now! The noise is pretty loud TBH. It didnt do it before the belts were replaced. Don't hold them responsible at all, but they are trying to sort it. Anyone any previous experience?

How carefully have they tensioned the belts? - There's a proper* Porsche tool for setting belt tension, as it's supposedly critical...

Not sure TBH. Though they do seem to be fairly clued up. Will ask!

You bought the car with those plates fitted and wasn't aware...

Eh? Sorry Trig, not sure what you mean there?

Usually I would reckon belt too tight............but does it do it with the cover off? Sounds simple but it can be easy to reassemble and have the belt rub the cover especially if cover is plastic and old/distorted

FFS, wrong thread don't know what happened there!

LOLZ,

Will ask the question, sounds like a possibility! Thanks!

They all do that sir.

Seriously, they do whine*, there's three belts whizzing about.

Try and listen to some others.

*of course yours may be a VERY loud whine and I could be talking out of my tract.

Don't know of any others to listen to, as I am not a 944 club member or anything.. Only club I belong to is this one! The only 'club' I want to belong to really!

Have decided to check out the Haynes manual that came with the car and check the tension of the timing/balance belts myself. The Haynes manual suggests taking the car to a dealer! WTF?

A workshop manual that has no section for certain DIY repairs.... The theme continues with other repairs.

Errrr. It is American though. Are they thicker than us Brits, or is it something I have missed?

Never seen this in other Haynes manuals over the years.

The point of Haynes manuals is DIY methinks.

Yes, unquestionably.

But moving on: I once had a Haynes Book of Lies for a V12 Jag XJ-S. In the intro it recommended that DIY-ers didn't actually attempt any DIY work on the car themselves due to its complexity...! Fair enough though, as the rear axle had to be dropped to change the brake pads in the inboard discs.

Finally sorted! :D

The garage have had the car for over a week, tried slackening the balance belt, tried all sorts of things, but still a hefty whine. Seemed nothing they did would stop the noise. (It was loud.)

Finally they have sourced a belt that has a different tooth profile to address the whining and it works!

Normal service resumed thank fook. No whining at all.

Hats off to the garage for spending time on't Internet researching and sorting it, rather than just giving up. Nice.

The garage I worked in years ago had one of these in for rear pads: All the rear seats came out, as did the oxy-acetalene gun... Square hole cut above diff, pads changed & panel spot welded back "to make it easier next time!" I'm sure that's NOT the correct thing to do, but it saved the punter £££s
