Mrs Micrashed has this:

With the DW10 2.0 16v donkey with the NON FAP system. Im well aware of the tendency for these donkeys to grenade their timing belt so this summer it got a new belts, tensioners and pumps session at a cost of £400. Apart from that its been fine up untill about 6 weeks ago when the K light (EML) came on and it threw up the "Depoloution Sysyem Faulty" message. I traced it to the EGR valve sticking open, oddly though with the EGR "open" and throwing all its nasty soot down the zorst pipe the car runs brilliantly. When the light goes off (and presumably the valve has shut again) it runs like a bag of shit and coughs and splutters. The only code it throws off on the fault reader is "EGR OPEN".

Local DERV specialist wants to "clean" the entire system (Manifold, EGR and shit), I have already cleaned the EGR once and it went away for about 3 weeks then the problem came back again. I am dubious to the effectiveness of cleaning anything else.

Personally I would like to blank off the valve myself but wonder what issues that will cause.

Any DERV experts give me an opinion please?

And Cav ye can fuck off suggesting I swap it for a Diesel Zafira :wink:

I'd clean it, check it stays off for a day or so, then blank it off and go from there.

Hateful things.

I think it depends on the year.

My 607 is a 2001 and that is fine with EGR blocked.

I achieved this by putting a piece of sardin tin under the flange where the EGR pipe joins the inlet.

Later HDIs (maybe 2003 onwards?) will complain about doing this, but it won't do the engine any hard to try so you might as well give it a go.

Blocking off the EGR might cause some interesting emmisions readings come the MoT but if it passes and the car runs fine, then why not. Also, depending on how the car has been driven then there may be some soot desposits in the intake manifold. Try closing the EGR (make it run like a tractor) and taking it for a good long red line razz to suck all the shite out the intake and blast it out the back with some redex (or similar) to loosen off anything that may be stuck in the cylinders / exhaust etc. If it continues to run like it's being fuelled by rusty spanners after that then just jimmy the EGR in the manner you are now accustomed to.

The only thing that they test at the MOT is particulate emissions (smoke).

EGR actually makes particulate emissions increase so blocking the EGR makes an MOT pass easier not harder.

Cheers chaps.

So the opinion is, try to extinguish the K light then blank off the EGR. The only thing I have noticed with the EGR stuck in the bypass position is that the car is a little more grumpy starting up when cold. Soon gets going though and runs fine afterwards. In fact it runs a damn sight better with the valve bypassed at the moment.

Now I need to buy a tin of sardines... In Sauce or not?

Does SWMBO do a lot of short(ish) journeys? If so, an "Italian tune-up" may help... 8)

Mixed really, few trips a week at 20mph short haul, few trips at *cough - cough* 90MPH down the M6

Might buy one of these next - its bound to be more reliable....
