May need dieselshite

I've applied for a new job - £4k a year more - but a 150mile daily commute, via M25 and M23.

If i do this trip in The Moose, (V40 T4), there's a 99.157954% chance I'll be no better off due to the horrible price of pez.

The main issue is - dosh. I haven't got any. I'd need to finance the purchase through selling Moose - £1500?ish ono etc, so that puts me in Shite territory.

Needs to be a "normal" sized car - I'm a 6ft tall lardbucket, so no Aixiams etc, or Smart cars.

I'm thinking Dizz Nissan Almera, Fockus, Ashtray, Corrolla that type of shizz. But the prospect of any of those is prompting mild panic attacks and narcolepsy in alternate measures.

Anyone got any better ideas.

Unfortunately the Horsey Horseless never came as a diesel.

Cheers!!

It is prolly not of interest but I still have the xantia estate turbo D here, still doing sterling work as my daily...

Hmmm.....hadn't considered a Xantia, kinda slipped off my radar

Will certainly bear that in mind, cheers.

Anything with a XUD or HDi would fit the bill i'd thought, you'd get a nice, late 306 HDi for that money.

@ Trigger - Good idea, bro had one, was pretty ok to drive.

@ M'Coli - Theoretilcally yes, but i don't have the funds to get the conversion done.

It's a pisser really - i used to like* my job, but recently it's become unbearable, which has forced my hand somewhat. I may well be cuttong my nose to spite my face in going for another job so far away, but i'm running out of energy with the current job, i can't be banging my head against the wall all my life.

EDIT: It's 10.30 and I've not started yet....

I do 1k+ miles a week, last year I did most if them in a non pd VW Bora tdi, no complaints and averaged 56mpg.

I'm currently using an early Volvo S80 with a slushbox and Audi 5 pot diesel engine. I'm down to 45mpg but it's so comfy and relaxed I don't care.

Oh, and both of the above can run on veg oil ;)

Maybe worth sticking it on a credit card? Your fuel savings are bound to be more than the interest on it, and you can repay it all as soon as you get some more cash. I wouldn't want to trade a known reliable car for a random bit of shite, especially if my livelihood depended on being able to arrive on time every morning.

Hopefully it is a better job...........but i think the rise will go on fuel.

3 gallons a day (assuming 50 mpg ave) X 5 days a week x 45 weeks a year (ish?)= about the payrise

Unless you can fit a 106..........

My Peugeot 205 diesel is doing 55-59mpg at 400 miles a week, there's another bloke in work who's giving me a good shoeing in his 106 diesel at 62mpg.

Non turbo diesels for more mpg, less complexity, less cost to fix and cheaper to buy. Good 205 diesels are £500 - £700, 106s are a bit more and a bit smaller. 306s probably the same cost as a 106 but maybe more space.

I find the 205 roomy enough, I'm 6ft 1 and can't say no to the occasional cream cake. It's fine for the hour a day's trip

8 valve HDI is bomb proof and normally survive a snapped cambelt (they just bust a few rockers)

came in 90bhp or 110bhp which is going to be much nicer, but the 110 came with DMF which can be expensive, except for the Xantia 110bhp which has a normal flywheel

You could get a nice 406 HDI and just budget for a solid flywheel conversion if/when the DMF goes

I almost forgot - Rover 75 cdti

If you're doing a lot of miles every day you need something comfortable as well as economical or you'll end up being even more knackered.

For me a high mileage daily has to be auto, have cruise and aircon, sorry its not shite but I'm getting old fat and lazy.

My shortlist for dailies (budget £1.5k) is:

Rover 75

Merc c220 cdi

Volvo S60/80 ... I'm thinking about changing my s80 for the smaller s60 with the d5 engine.

Citroen XM 2.1TD

VAG non-pd tdi

That said - buy ruffgeezers Xantia :D

if you go for pug cit diesel auto then avoid the AL4 gearbox, which probably means something with a DPF. However I know how to disable the DPF but an AL4 cannot be made reliable

I almost went for an S80 diesel auto but I don't know much about them or if they are in your price range. They make a nice noise though

Thanks for the input chaps - I'm not sure I'd fit in a 106 - although if someone got it on video, theres £250 from You've Been Framed!

I can't stick the lpg conversion on a credit card - they're full :( , which is another reason to want to change jobs.

I'd not done the sums before now to be honest - it's looking like I'll break even(ish), but theres nunerous other reasons to want to change, and I won't bore you with them - suffice to say I'll actually be able to wank myself into a stupor over old shite than i do now! Bonus!!

Could you fit in a 206? The 206HDi is coming into that sort of budget.

Posted

Yep, Mrs_O had a 206, no problem with that!

I can see my ebay watch list starting to get cluttered.....

I've added a Xsara hdi estate to the fleet, same underpinnings as the 306 but without the badge tax.
