meggersdog Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 I bought this a couple of weeks ago but due to work and a poorly dog parked it up and left it.Must be at least 15 years since I've owned a series 11a so when I spotted this one at the local BCA I got into a small bidding war with Mr Classic car buyer Peter. After spotting this written on the windscreenI found the doors unlocked (all the doors lock with one key) and decided to pull the stop control cable out for a bit of a jape.A couple of minutes after the auction driver kept turning it over my mate (spoilsport) pushed the cable back in.Whilst being driven through the auction I chatted to the driver about it and yes they had no idea a 45 year old diesel engine had a mechanical stop control.Ooh look new door topsThe drive home was eventful. The speedo didn't go above 30mph and there is a 50mph speed camera on the way home. Not much chance of hitting 60 but you never know.About 2 miles from home the throttle cable snapped.Luckily my mate was following in my trusty Discovery with a few tools in the back. After cutting the outer cable back the inner was reconnected and away we went.OMG ringer alert, that's the wrong dash surely ?.There are a few receipts from Paddocks and John Craddock, new springs a couple of years ago (not parabolic),comfy-ish seats, freewheeling hubs,MOT until the end of October and although taxed I still haven't received it so popped into the post office this morning and got some more tax.It is showing that the car has done a little over 250 miles sine the last MOT but whether the mileometer works the same way as the speedo I don't know yet.The car steers fine and the brakes pull up straight. There's evidence of chassis welding but it's not a patchwork quilt and fairly solid for the most part. There is a push button that you hold in to activate the glow plugs and seeing as it's been sat in the field for two weeks after ten seconds of glow plug action it struck up straight away. When I get more time I will trundle about in it a bit more.
Cheggers Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Looks like a decent old thing. What's the plan, off-road toy or daily driver??
dollywobbler Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Great stuff. How miserable is it to drive? Should be synchro only on third and fourth on these I think?
meggersdog Posted September 28, 2012 Author Posted September 28, 2012 Cheggers, just a toy I use the Discovery for daily duties and offroad pay'n'play days but a little green laning for the old girl probably won't hurt.Dollywobbler, I haven't had a real good inspection but it appears to be a series 3 'box as there is no crunching into second. Not too miserable but I don't think my ears could take a trip longer than about 20 miles.
RedSparrow Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Hey that's quite nice. Bin the chequerplate and you'll be on to a winner.
Cavcraft Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Brill, still fancy one of these. Soz to be vulgar and all that, but how much did it set you back?
dollywobbler Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Is that on Disco steelies Tayne? I love those wheels. Had I owned my Rangie for longer, I would have binned the horrible, mangy alloys for a set of those.
meggersdog Posted September 29, 2012 Author Posted September 29, 2012 Brill, still fancy one of these. Soz to be vulgar and all that, but how much did it set you back? Well it came from Marshalls ,the Land Rover main dealers, and the reserve was £1500.Series 2's do seem to be creeping up in value and MOT'd petrol ones make that on ebay.My provisional bid was accepted later in the day so all in including buyers fee it cost me £1200-ish.Considering how straight and presentable it is I don't think I paid too much and if you go by PC's guide price then it's a bit of a bargain.
dollywobbler Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Yeah, sounds good for the money. Series Landies seem to have realistic values unlike Defenders.
