I've had a few of the buggers as well.

Can't find the pics of the other ones, but they've all been bloody good things. Only one that ever 'failed to proceed' in my ownership was the silver one. It fried its alternator and left me stranded. Even the P38s have always done the job.

The later ones are a huge step forward to drive, and they're bloody epic off road.

I instinctively like the P38 most, because it's the shitest one by far!

It looks like LR just kept hammering a bigger body over the old one.

None of the original's descendants has its grace, sweet proportions or thorough Britishness. Nout wrong with the VM diesel, but the gentle, purring V8 always sounded lovely. Drove them many a mile back in the late eighties and early nineties - loved every last idiosyncracy. Up there with old Saabs, Citroens, other lovely Rovers and fifties Bentleys. If anyone ever supplies another car with rubber mats it'll be a fashion statement.

The mustard yellow in previous posts looks a little off original colour - which could be my envy or faded eyes. Would love a seventies 2 door in Lincoln Green with original paint, no matter how scruffy. Scruffier the better, so long as the structure was sound.

I'm sure the BMW 530D was available in 1999 when the Rangerover was still in full swing,so to have upgraded to that engine or at least offer that option would have been a great asset. I am correct in thinking the BMW 2.5 and 3.0 were both similar looking lumps which could be interchangeable ?

As for me,I really like the original Rangerover, although the later larger bumper ones, but the real star for me is the Rangerover Sport, which looks quite neat, and if not mollested with chrome 36" wheels can look a very nice car.The best part is when they are a few years old, they will be worth about the same money as a 10 year old Mondeo !

I'm not sure, but the 2.5 is a fairly basic engine, the 3.0 is a common rail job. Probably not worth fitting for the last 2 years of production.

Couldnt find any pics, but i had a 1992 vogue 3.9 se in 2006ish, lovely thing, totally reliable, and still going strong in the hands of a friend of mine towing his yacht about, though at 12mpg when towing, he doesnt travel far between filling stations!

What are the MPG figures like for say a 3.0 TDi compared to whatever petrol (4.4?) engine was available in the newer shape (2002 on) Ranger Rovers? I'd bloody love one one day* but with diesel being dearer than petrol I'm wondering if they really are more economical?

The BMW 3.0 TD and 4.4 pez V8s were in the earlier L322s (2002-2006 I think), later replaced with Jag V8s (supercharged and NA) and the 3.6 TDV8.

The BMW-engined cars only have five speed autos and the Jag stuff has 6 gears.

A 3.0 will do 20-25mpg and a 4.4 pez will do 14-19mpg, Jag-engined petrols will be slightly better.

You would be able to better these figures if you sat at 60mph on a free-flowing dual carriageway or make them worse if you spent days/weeks driving around a large city.

I'd go for a BMW-engined 4.4 on lpg if shopping at the bottom of the L322 market, if I had more cash then a 3.6 TDV8 would give only a marginal improvement in economy over the 3.0 but much better performance.

I dont know exactly but I guess my 200tdi and my p38 do between 24-28mpg

£100 of dizzle and zeroing the trip can give 450ish miles between fill ups, just over £120 is a full tank

one thing about the p38 is the gearing is odd, 1st is very high as is reverse, not good for steep driveways and slopes etc, id try it in low range if the frigger worked

I'm very pleased to see no Ewoks in this thread. Now that is pissing on your heritage! (albeit a bloody good way to make lots of money, frustratingly. I'd utterly under-estimated how many people wanted to pay twice the price of a Freelander for a Freelander styled like a crash helmet).

^^sign of the times sadly.

Waiting for a mid engined rear drive 'range rover' a la porsche and the cayenne

Ta. Currently watching prices which seem to be dropping fast, still a few years away before I get one though :(

The thing with range rover prices is they are a good breaker, engine/axles make good profit and everything else is a bonus

I know of people paying £600-£750 for a shitter just for breaking or off roader project*

*These fuckwits who do the "trayback" or "bobtail" need to be shot with a ball of their own shit fired from a mortar canon

At least its on Rangerover alloys, and not 20" chrome ones ! They would look nice with the centers colour coded

Posted

I know that, I meant the original 70s steels were nicer than the 80s alloys, or indeed any alloy wheel that's ever been fitted to the RR since. Although I do like the fake Ferrari 5 spokes on the P38.

Mondials [/pedant]

I'd tolerate any of the factory alloys apart from 18" Triple Sports.

Which were a rather pathetic attempt to ape the original Classic 3-spoke (itself a rip off of a Mustang alloy).

The 3DR models are ace, I agree with Cavette about the pikey bus model too.

There was a while back a god awful one of those with some sort of body kit on around where I live, haven't seen it for a while but I will get a snap if it rears it's head.
