£5995 Suzuki

After the 'new car price hikes' during the scappage scheme a few years ago, it seems that reality is sinking in with retailers. :D Seems like a decent price for a new, relatively simple car - does anyone agree?

On Saturday while I was the Nissan dealers awaiting the handbrake cable to be tightened up correctly, I sat in the Alto's twin - the Nissan Pixo - and I thought what a sweet little no frills car. The demonstrator Pixo had a retail price of £8695 - which seemed like a rip off compared to the Alto.

I hired an original Alto in Cyprus sixteen years ago - three pot engine was great!

Drove a Pixo a couple of years back and I have to say that it was alright. Not the last word in performance, handling or anything but as a basic new car they did the job very nicely.

Altos have been made in India by Maruti for ages. Mrs_L had a 1999 Alto which was a superb car. Slow and flimsy but massively economical, very reliable and cost buttons to run.

Six grand for a half decent looking brand new car can't be bad.

I believe the Pixo can be had for about that money too, but you have to buy the uBer basic edition.

Think I would rather buy a Tiida though for the money.

Suzuki? Japanese? Made in India by Maruti

Probably due to the hinged windows in the back doors I'd always assumed these things were another part of the Aygo/107/C1 conglomerate.....

What a way to spaff six large when you could buy brookjm's 560 Merc, fix it up and spend the rest on petrol....

The Maruti Gypsy is long wheel base only though.

Ideally I'd like a coil sprung swb SJ with an XUD but I'm not sure that spec was ever made in right hand drive.

It does however have an advanced spec list, with a sat nav that directs you to the nearest unguarded copper cabling

Errrrrr, the words "Appliance" and "White goods" are ringing in my ears, surely a 3 year old Fiesta or the like would be a better bet. A 3 year old alto would be worth a about as much as a half eaten bag of Haribo (with all the good ones gone)

The more people that buy cars like this the better, as they'll soon be dropping into 'our' radar. We should be celebrating the fact mingebag cars like these come along.

Not entitrely sure that a three year old Fiesta or whatever would be a better bet tbh. Yes that would have already done its depreciating but a new car at £5995 aint got that far to fall anyway. Run it for 10 years and even if you throw it away at that point (though to be fair it'd still be worth something then) depreciation is only £600 a year.

White goods? Well really all mass produced cars are that surely? Yes its not very interesting but then having driven a lot of new stuff in the last few years then neither are most new cars.
