Film Work

OK it's set in 1974, and just had a chat with the Art Director of an upcoming film, set and shot in Bury, starting in early September.

They are looking for 2 character cars, one is a Viva HB estate. The other they haven't decided on a make or model, maybe you could help me with this. The character is a girl of 17 who's just passed her test. So, I am thinking something that would be a banger in 74, say 10 years old. They did initially say a Marina, but at around 3 years old in 74 that's way too new a car. Bear in mind, if you have something to offer for this 'part' the car has to look it's age in 1974. So, if it's 10 years old, it has to look a bit worn and used, not minty fresh!

They are also looking for a suitable car for a panda car, maybe an Allegro or Marina, maybe even a mini! BTW, the cars used in Life on Mars are 1, too late and 2, have Metropolitan Police livery!!

So what yer got??

Any suggestions on the 'new driver' car?

Posted

'New' driver car could be a Mini, BMC 1100 or Morris Minor I would have thought. Not impossible to find slightly ratty examples of the latter pair, though ratty Mk1 Minis don't seem to be easy to find these days.

Posted

I thought Mini or Moggy too, but agreed the right condition might be hard to find.

Posted

Yep, Mini's, Ford Anglia, Hillman Imp, Triumph Herald, VW Beetle and Morris Minors would all be high contenders I'd expect.

Posted

I know of a black '64 Herald that might fit the bill. 8)

Hmm sounds interesting, I know they were looking for lighter cars but this one might be difficult to get. Can you get me a pic please? And contact details........... Bear in mind the shoot is oop north....

When do you need it for? I'm having a few mechanical issues at present but we've got this

It's a 72 series 3 but could probably pretend to be a few years older ( I think it wears a series 2 grille )and it certainly looks a bit rough. The rust has come through on the seams since the picture was taken and one wing is a different shade of purple :?

Some film work would give me a deadline to get it sorted out for too which would be no bad thing

It has a Mk3 grille, one bar means 1100 and 3 bars means 1300. It's not far off the mark though, running a 10 year old car in 1974 was like running a 20 year old car now, I think she would be driving an E or F plate car.

whats the oldest that could be? Cos its reg year would make it 2 years old and waaay too new!

August 15th 1962 was the launch date..... were there any significant trim changes to the range that would give it a later cut-off year?

Posted

Trim isn't a huge prob, exterior things like bumpers do. Though l am wondering about a viva HC with ricaros!

HC would be far too new. If we're talking 1964, that's still HA territory - but if the other car is a Viva HB, you don't really want a Vauxhall love-in.

Hillman Imp is another one.

Triumph 1300 in Rattle can black??

Sorry I'm a fool

The 2 big visual clues between series 2 and 3 are the grille and the dash, I have an (easily changed) series 3 grille and a slightly altered series 2 dash

The whole interior is a bit non standard with Wolseley seats and matching vinyl over the black card board bits of dash, but I reckon that could count as period mods for a youngun in the 70s, bit like the paintwork :D

Gloss roller matt black actually

It's old and its ratty. Just how I like em...or is that how I like my women? I forget

Rattle can black is a bit RR! Is it slammed on rimz?

You could also just get a 2CV (or even Beetle) from whenever and just fit the right period parts (headlights/bumpers).

How about a 1966 Reliant Rebel saloon? 600cc engine, bright red. Production ran from 1964 - 1973 So bang on for the period. Possibly a bit minty looking after the recent restoration work though

*speculative RR style post*

I could have put the old headlamps and rusty wheels back on my Amazon for a bit, but it would probably be too large for a 'girl's car' in the seventies. It would have been 11 years old at the time.

Also it has no MOT, no NSF inner sill, brakes, etc.

I'd get some kind of age related plate on MM5's Herald and hoy that round.

Posted

I'd definitely go with a Herald, easy to drive and cheap to buy - perfect for girl's first car in the mid 70s.

Posted

If you are interested in the Herald, it would drive me to actually do any work on it

Interior shots "may" be a problem as it currently has Mazda RX7 seats, but could pop something in closer to the time that is more "fitting" , with that era.

Apart from a VERY shiny stainless steel exhaust system, the exterior looks completely stock

Posted

A40 Farina? 1958-67? later ones would have been the right age - and look a bit old in 72. Still fairly cheap and plentiful now. Wish I had one!

Posted

Now no comments on my age here...but from memory, Mini series cars, ADO13's, 105E Anglias, early Mk1 Escorts, Mk1 Cortina's, Heralds, Imps, series V minx, HA Viva, Early HB Viva, Moggy, In reality most girls did not buy their own cars, the parents did and there for they were 'solid' choices, not stylish

Posted

A40 is a good call, 'Calum' on here has a nice one

Posted

im sure my two old vauxhalls would fit the bill...sadly ive sold them on..victors and moggies the right era too..anglias etc...theres still plenty out there

Would a 2CV be any good?

There's still plenty about in a slightly ropey state, and with a fake (older) plate on they would look right - they already look 'old' to most people anyhow. Also, they'd be seen as cheap to run back in the day, and so fairly sensible for this character to drive.

Also, most people wouldn't know they'd been re-introduced to the UK market in the '70s, after a few years away. A '60s one would probably be plausible to most viewers.

Just a thought ...........

If this was a go-er, no doubt Autoshite could provide.
