Has anyone got anything for sale suitable as a first car? Got a friend who has just passed his test. being male and living in london insurance is going to be a bum rape already so I thought I would help out.

Ideally 1.0/1.2 small ish and reliable ish. Budget is up to £750.

i am off up to Scotland on Saturday and so could detour on the way home to get stuff.

A girl at work has a 1.4 Astra for £600. It was MoT'd a few months back and had a service........had h/gasket, water pump, cam belt and idlers along with new brakes (inc cylinders on the back). All in all well sorted old car in good order.

She has had it about a year........she bought it from the family of the first owner who had died.

Mate has a W reg Corsa 1.2 Envoy - 5 door in metallic blue. Roughly 45K on the clock and is pretty darn straight. Runs absolutely lovely, has had new lamda sensor, crank position sensor and airflow meter IIRC.

No tax but will have a full years ticket. Good London vehicle. He is looking for around £750. He and the car are in North London/Enfield.

Hi Moog

It might be best if your Friend gets some quotes on insurance first as the Buyer of my LNA got caught out with the insurance. If the car is too old most normal insurance companies want it on a classic policy and you can't get one of those if you are under 21.

So the lad who bought my LNA can't get insurance on it and is really upset as he loved it. Its just sitting on SORN. I'd have had it back but we bought the Foxy Potato with the dosh.

See my comment above. Insurance companies are effectively preventing young drivers have classic cars.

It is possible for someone under 21 to have a classic car, but it's not as easy as it used to be since Footman James decided to only insure under 25's on Morris Minors (apart from certain existing customers who received 100% premium increases). Peter James insurance only cover Triumphs and MG's, RH Insurance only cover A30/35, FJ only cover MM... you get the picture.

Having said that, eveything is possible. I'm 21, and have two classic cars (Austin Cambridge and A35) FC with Lancaster insurance, the Cambridge is insured as the daily. £500 per year for the two. I have just insured my 2660 cc 1952 Austin Atlantic (this morning!) for £200 after being told by several companies it wasn't possible. If you've got friends in high places, and can convince them you're a genuine enthusiast, rather than someone after cheap insurance, it's perfectly possible. I reckon what swung it in my case was telling the big cheese at the insurance company I was the Essex representative of the A30/35 owners club.

Idiotboy - I'd start with Adrian Flux insurance personally. They seem to insure anyone, on anything.

One of my work colleagues is in the process of replacing his Ford KA with something that will accommodate the GARGANTUAN buggy his MIL bought for them. He phoned me today to ask my opinion on a £550 Citroen C5 so it looks like the KA will be on the market fairly soon, possibly even now.

The car is in Fife. I have no idea of the condition except that it looks quite presentable and unmolested, he's never had any trouble with it in a year or so, and that it does need a new exhaust back box. I don't know about the MOT/tax status either, except that it's road legal at the moment. It's an R plate, which makes it the oldest one I've seen lately by a large margin. I can't imagine he'll be wanting a huge amount for it.

It might be a bit too shitey for the purpose but if it's a possibility I'll prime him and pass phone numbers on.

Cheer, will run them all past him. He will need to get ins quotes as well as they can differ greatly.
