Auf Wiedersehen Merc

Even though it flew through its MOT, for reasons I still can't understand I've sold my W124. I put a speculative ad on Scumtree and I quickly received a call on my mobile from a number so long it filled my Samsungs screen. The gentlemans accent on the other end of the line had me first thinking that I had won a cuddly meerkat toy for insuring a backhatch car but as it happens he was an importer/exporter of old Mercedes cars and vans to Lithuania. What's it like dealing with these people? Well, he offered full asking price over the phone less surrender value of the tax with no haggling and promised me an easy transaction. I was still unconvinced that the deal would go though that easily but as there's nothing to lose by at least giving him the benefit of the doubt I arranged a time for him to have his transporter driver to meet me at the Wirral Unit. I scampered off work early to meet him and briefed the gatehouse on the industrial estate that someone who doesn't speak English will be turning up in a car transporter to meet me.

Now for some pics.

I really don't envy car transporter drivers with their tiny cabs to live in.

This Plymouth badged Chrysler Voyager belonged to a tourist and had broken down in the UK and was being recovered home.

And then it was gone! All in all I sold it for £200 more than I paid for it and it's never let me down and only cost me about £60 in repairs in two and a half years. Yes I did feel a little upset to see it go, particularly as I had no real need to sell it.

Here's the score with its fate, apparently it's already found a buyer at 2000 euros, a price that represents about four months wages which surprises me as it's a twenty year old Merc with the steering wheel on the wrong side (for them). I would of thought that Germany would of been a better place to buy old Mercs as it's geographically closer and they also drive on the right.

Now I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket and there doesn't appear to be anything on Ebay/Gumtree to tempt me!

I hope that the new owner enjoys many miles of trouble-free Mercing :)

The Lithuanians love big old western cars. When I visited two years ago I was surprised to see more Citroen XM's there then I ever had in one place, even when the model was current. Not only that, they can and will fix anything, as an example they offer a cheap and well engineered replacement for a well known XM weakness, the strut top mount.

Have to say all the Lithuanians we met were really sound too, top place to go :D

The buyer rang me up to thank me for the smooth sale and said......."You get me Lady Di death type S Class I get you 1000 Euro".

I work day-to-day with a Lithuanian chap, and my company employs a fair few sub-contractors who hail from that country. Great guys 8)

It's in Redfern Street (Bootle, I think) so if you go to collect it feel free to drop into that waste place (Shanks?) if it's still there and tell them I said they're a bunch of lazy, workshy cockknockers.

Thanks.

2000€ would get you an 80s E-class in Germany.

As said earlier, those guys are good at improvisation. I see a LHD conversion in L218SKF's future...
