Myreton Museum of Shite Visit

Recommended Posts

Me and Mrs C spent last night in Edinburgh after a visit to the see the Pandas at the Zoo (they're lazy bastards). This morning we decided to head to head down to North Berwick to get a cone as it was looking like it was going to be a nice day. This was my idea as I had a secret agenda, which went further than a sneaky double cone on the beach.

My Dad has a caravan in North Berwick and I've driven past the sign for Myreton Motor museum loads of times and never went. Today would be the day.

You know those museums that only display perfectly restored cars raised up on platfroms behind velvet ropes? This isn't one of those museums. The exhibits not only haven't been restored in some cases they haven't even been washed!

Bam! Straight in the door and the first car is this Scamp. It's an electric car (CUL8R LEAF) and was built in Prestwick. Well I say built it never made it into production.

This little clubman had 8000 miles on it and still had the plastic covers on the back seats. How Mini's should be.

This thing is a Cooper special with a fibre glass body. Captain Tarbert B Cornflake (or similiar) was bombing around tracks at nearly 100mph in this thing! The pictures don't do justice to how rough or fragile it looks.

I actually lol'd when I saw the leather chain on this bike. I can imagine bombing along on it and that belt snapping and flicking me in the nuts.

I've no idea what's the story with this Fiat is as there was no plaque but it's had an extremely sparkly paint job. I bet it looked GR8 in 1998.

I've never seen one of these before. It's an Austin Swallow, which is a re-bodied Austin 7. Pretty cute I recon.

This Chrysler van was originally a car but re-bodied to be a van for news paper humphing duties. Because it had a pretty powerful engine for the time (21.9bhp) it was the van they used for taking papers from Edinburger down to the Borders. There's no paint on it, it's just plain Aluminium, which I think looks GR12.

This old Rapier was a right rough old thing covered in handpainted panels and not rubbed down pudding. It turns out the cars was a one owner job and the old girl that had it gave it to the museum when I guess either her or it gave up the ghost.

This Minor was pretty stunning. The old boy who owned it restored it in the 80's then spent the next 10 years plundering no1 positions at local classic car shows in it. It started to get 2nd places in thre mid 90's so he re-restored it. Unfortunatly he passed on and his widow gave it to the museum.

I wish I'd take a picture of the plaque on this Humber as it basically read "Humber Super snipes where well know for having shit handling but could do 100mph on an open road"

Informative.

This Morris Oxford was rescued from an Edinburgh scrap yard in 1950. While the guy who bought it was rummaging around in it he found an envelope with a letter written by his Auntie wedged down the side of the glove box. It turned out his Grandpa had actually bought the car from new. Freaky.

They also have a big room up the stairs full of shite pushbikes and various peddle cars and stuff but Mrs Cort was grumbling by now so I had to make a reasonably quick exit.

WTF IS THIS?

I like the plastic v-twin with no attempt to hide the lawnmower engine directly behind it.

If you're in the area it's a good visit for any shite fans. I wish I'd had some more time to mooch over them.

THe WTF Orange "bike" looks like an Ariel Shopper 3.

That place looks awesome, I think I have tried to go there a couple of times and found it shut. Great snaps and commentary, I LOL'd at the idea of getting bruised knackers off the leather bike 'chain'

Its an Ariel 3 moped, the frame leans like a bike while the engine and back wheels stay level....interesting to ride!

I have tried to visit this place too, and it was closed. Good work getting there when it was open!

True. But not a Clubman - a Morris Mini Traveller.

The opening hours on the website corresponded with my visit. I think it's opened at random.

I visited that place in 1986 and was quite impressed, its a bit like a minature version of the stondon transport museum .Stondon museum is an essential destination for any autoshiters, there are some real nice bits on display but some of it is dead rough,i mean where do you get the chance to see a ds convertible in rough n ready condition these days?. I think the mini may be a countryman due to the wood trim on the side.

That patina'd Packard is teh sex, love the TA Citroen too. 8)

I've never even heard of that place, I'll have to drag myself east of the M8 corridor and pay it a visit some day.
