Hyundai i30 Shite of the future ?

I've just bought a 58 reg Hyundai i30 and to be honest am really impressed with it. Its a 1.4 petrol and is a really nice drive, its comfortable and so far economy has been good. Only slight downside is the low gearing which means its not as relaxed as it could be on the motorway.

I've driven a couple of Hyundai's in the past and they were both pretty crap.

So is the i30 shite of the future ?

Sounds far too competent to be autoshite! See if anything falls off and needs re-attaching with gaffer tape in the next few weeks.

I drove an i30 a little while ago, and it seems to well made and to well "sorted" to ever be Autoshite.

Definitely! Focus style independent rear suspension, cheap, great in the JDPower surveys, designed and built in Europe so no longer a pseudo-grey import/"world car"... it's just brand snobbery that's keeping the boring old GMs and Fords ahead. Kind of the the first Carina Es that made minicab drivers think why have we been driving shitty Rovers all our life?

I followed a new one the other day and must admit to thinking how nice it looked, very Seat Ibiza'ish lines so probably by the same designer.

My father in law bought his 2 years ago and hasnt had any problems so far. driving his is what persuaded me to buy mine.

Will report back if anything falls of mine but am really impressed with it so far

Some new Hyundais look really sexy indeed - the i40 especially. I would!

A friend has just bought one and whilst its not an exciting sort of thing it seems pretty well screwed together and pleasant enough.

Mother in law bought one new last year, a nice old thing (ATCNBE) but has flatly refused to start 3 or 4 times until a mechanic arrives 2 hours later when it bursts into life!

100% Future shite!

Only time will tell what becomes shite of the future as most cars from traditionally shite manufacturers are getting pretty decent.

Like the i30, we've recently got a Kia Ce'ed Estate as our daily hack and I really cannot fault it for pootling about in - my only criticism is it's a bit sluggish (being a 1.6 petrol) but that's partly as I'm used to the turdblower Mondeo I had before, give the Kia some rev's and it' pretty respectable. And given that it comes with a 7 year warranty Kia must be fairly sure it's pretty well screwed together.

I learned to drive in a Kia Pride and if you said to me then that one day I'd be singing the praises of Kia I'd have laughed so hard my eyes would have fallen out. Mind you as a car to learn in it wasn't too bad - no PAS, not many new cars could 'boast' that in 1998 and it made a man of me!

I kind of think the concept of Autoshite is a dying one. Sure some weirdos like us lot will keep a few obscure motors alive, but the way every product now has a built in expiry and is then immidiately recycled into the next new product means that people just don't maintain or preserve things anymore. Just buy a new one.

Allow me to use South park to illustrate my point:

Twenty years ago, Ford and Vauxhall were pretty bog standard, cheerful motoring. Kind of guaranteed to be shite at some point, when a manufacturer makes the only specification difference between two trim levels "Cigar lighter" and "passenger vanity mirror" then you know it's destined for shitedom. Volkswagen were the choice for someone who thought they were better than the neighbours, and BMW was the choice for anyone who was.

Ford now? Luxury. Cars that park themselves, Sony DAB stereos, all gizmos and mood lighting. Same with Vauxhall. Hyundai and their ilk (Kia, and some more that I can't think of) are just filling the gap left where the requirement is affordable, non-offensive everyday motoring.

So yeah, futureshite. Except a new Hyundai in 20 years time will be luxury motoring and it'll all have shifted again.

To be honest that could just as well be the current Megane, Astra or Guilietta

It certainly could...which can only be a good thing for Hyundai.

To me it means something that's impossible to get excited about. I'm sure many have been bought by old giffers (probably under scrappage), so low mileage examples will turn up in 20-25 years time
