Listing our five senses and our favourite, and indeed least favourite car based applications of them.

 

Sight first.

Sight

Ooh, yes please.

 

Er... no ta.

 

Smell

Weirdly, it's a comforting sort of smell in there, something to do with Austins.

 

This however, sets my nose itching and my eyes running.

 

Touch

A good aged leather interior is a wonderful thing to the touch.

 

A synthetic sponge, however, is the other end of the spectrum, especially if it's picked grit up.

 

Sound

Rover SD1 with a straight six is one of the finer sounds to be heard.

 

That noise of cars running into one another, usually at speed, is a sound I could happily live without. Could be entirely connected to seeing a cyclist being knocked off his bicycle (he was right of way, and being sensible) by a careless driver coming out of a road end. Ever since that event the noise of cars hitting one another makes me feel sick. Happily, since leaving Sheffield I've not had to hear it.

 

Edited to add: I didn't put a 'taste' in because I can't get the idea of licking a car out of my head.

Going to be a lot of image-googling, I can feel it... and yes, I'm doing it too!

 

Ok, smell:

Leather seats, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

And the one I really don't want, above all others:

Perpetrators should be made to lick the interior clean.

 

Sight:

I'd have it back in a heartbeat and just gaze out of the window at it.....

And, er, someone should be shot for this...

And why the fuck are they all in such dull non-colours these days??????

 

Sound:

The only sound better than a blown Hemi is the Glenn Miller orchestra!

However we're more likely to hear...

...which is just depressing. Coldplay, anyone? Adele, even? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

 

Taste:

Might not be the first thing that springs to mind but I thought it was extremely restrained... except for what happens when you turn the key!

And at the other end of the scale....

Also a close contender under "Sight;" in fact this and the Beemer could easily be swapped and I wouldn't argue.

 

Touch:

All of it really (the interior of my 1962 Cadillac) but specifically, the delicate column-mounted shifter for the automatic transmission. This is the way to fly!

This, simply, isn't.

I mean, come on, there's no need any more. Especially as for no visible reason I fail to adjust to doing it with my right hand, every time the opportunity arises. Automatic I can do, floor or column, but manual, forget it. Yet I do it with my left all the time, and I'm right-handed. Who knows?

And look at all that horrible plastic too.

Nothing against Reliant Regal vans as such, just the tossers who do this to them..

 

Touch - the best steering wheel ever.

 

Maybe a bit cruel to pick on the wee Micra when so many other early 80s Jap cars were the same but everything in a K10 Micra feels horrible and cheap.

 

Smell - I don't know if it was the hot oil smell or the old leather, but the Aston my old boss had smelt utterly gorgeous inside.

 

Worst motoring smell? Has to be...
