Found stationary on the carpet, once it'd been tissued up it became quite energetic. About 3/4" long with 6-8 legs at the very front. Looked like these but they look waaaay too big to be woodworms.

My other half (who's quite good at stuff like that) reckons it might be a 'Wooly Bear'. It's a beetle grub which likes to nibble wool, which might explain why it was in your carpet. My mother-in-law is a qualified entomologist, but she's not here. So I'll show her the pic next time she's round. Watch this space.

It's more likely she's thinking of a carpet beetle than a wooly bear, they're more prevalent in houses and they tend to eat crumbs and stuff like that, very often found in kitchens or houses that never get cleaned properly. That said, I'm with the above suggestion that it's a mealworm. If a neighbour has lizards as pets, that could be where it's come from as mealworms are good food for things like Geckoes and smaller lizards and sometimes mealworms do escape.

One of the favourite games of the mischievous street urchins near the flat I used to live in was to post creepy crawly things through the letterbox of residents and they were delighted when they found out they could buy crickets and mealworms from pet shops with no questions asked, little buggers. Funnily enough, it never happened to me, but it did happen to my neighbours... unless my cats ate the bugs that were posted, which is entirely likely, they were odd little cats.

BACK ON TOPIC: Mealworms are the larvae of the Darkling/Tenebrio Beetle. There's some info here: http://mealwormstore.com/mealworm_info.php and on Wikipedia They're found everywhere.

Thanks chaps, I'm sure Mrs WSE will sleep a little easier now that she knows it's a harmless fishing accessory :)
