Is the escort estate in the first of the laslt batch warring an "automatic "badge below number plate? It caught my eye as that, but may he wrong.

It's a mark 2 so would have been GL rather than XL, although I can't remember if you could get such high spec estates.

I'll check later, the only Ford Cars catalogue I've got to hand is a 1982, need to go out to the shed.

Whatever it was ( died in 1986) it was enthusiast owned, black back panel, twin reversing lights, dog guard, mud flaps, who knows what delights we'd find at the front. A pair of Lucas Suare 8s ? Maybe some wiper aero foil things?

It was a GL automatic according to Cartell.ie.
The Mark 2 Escort estate range seems to have remained unchanged for the whole period of production - 1100 base, 1300 base, 1300 L, 1300 GL.
The base saloon was replaced by Popular very early in Mark 2 production, but there was no Popular estate.

My 1980 run-out brochure confirms the 1300GL remained available until the very end, too....That edition confirms the black rear panel, too.

Thanks for those. We often used to stop in Marlborough when I was little, and I always thought of it as the place you parked in the middle of the road. I liked it because I could get a good look at the cars

Towns with cars parked in the middle of the road are usually a good bet on an old postcard (when they haven't taken the photo on market day or something silly). Cirencester is another good example......

Although I'd prefer to see cars of the '70s, I love the crisp look of the older card. Great selection of everyday '60s stuff there.
