No Timewasters No Canvassers Please

I have always been tempted to ring a number from an old ad to ask 'Is the car still for sale'

what be a canvasser?

Doorstep canvassers: politicians trying to get you to vote for them by going around knocking on peoples doors. Desperation springs to mind.

In the old days of advertising if you used the local papers then AutoTrader would ring you 227,619 times a week and ask you to advertise with them instead.

They still do.

I wonder how many of those dealers are still going, any you recognise Pete? Cubbin and North rings a bell, are/were they anything to do with Hardings? My dad bought a (used) Renault 4 from Hardings, pretty sure they had a dealership of some sort on the main road by Cammel Lairds many moons back and that's where my dad got the car from.

I remember the Lenton and McComb ford dealer in Maghull, im pretty sure thats where my grandad bought his 1994 ford escort (now sadly scrapped for a newer more horrible focus)

The only ones I can see that are still going reasonably strongly are Wingray and Georgesons.

My dad worked for Cubbin and North for a short while, they over-expanded in the early 90's and went pop shortly after.

Lenton and McComb went off to sell mobile phones instead.

Ryders are struggling along but had to sell off their Crosby site. I think they're still on Knowsley Rd, but they're on the way to history

Crosby Motorworld went in about '95.

Brookbridge went around 99ish. The building is now a taxi garage and the obligatory hand car wash.

M&L cars went not long after this ad. I think the building sells old ovens and the like now.

Racecourse Garage might still be there.

Walton Vale Car Centre comes and goes.

Of the new car dealerships listed, not many survived.

Williams BMW, Peoples Ford, Fairway Motors, Reynolds Honda, Road Range (although they've moved), Crosby Park Nissan, Renault Liverpool.

A few have changed name, but mainly they're all dead as dodos.
