Coniston Meet, Spring 2013

OK, now (in my head at least) "Coniston13" is taking shape. Looks like April 13th will be a Saturday, two weeks after Easter, which will be perfect as the crowds will have slacked off a bit and the weather should be relatively kind, or at least not raining horizontally. 13th of the 13th, with a bunch of cheap old cars; being planned 14 months early by a bloke 2000 miles away. What can possibly go wrong?

Yeah, this sounds like something I'd get involved with.

Who wants to bet we're still rushing around in the 2weeks prior getting MOTs and such, even with all this notice....

No bet... it WILL happen lol.

I dunno, you wait ages for an Autoshite Live! event, then two come along at once :D Coniston's a bit of a heroic schlep from the other end of Wales, but I like the idea in principle...

Great stuff! For the moment, this is good enough, just so I know someone will come. It's far enough ahead, I'll be asking for firm commitment in about 10-12 months. Chevy Impala, Maserati, already it's looking pretty exotic! I'll most likely try to organise a few local types to join us, car people obviously. Won't take me long to find them. I've already been around the streets surrounding my house, using Google Street View*, and just up the road I found an XJ6 S3 and an MGB GT parked together. :D We're everywhere, like weeds...

*Mind, these pics are 3 years old, it says so at the bottom...

Can't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to do this either.

Bloody hell Eddy, that's 14 months ahead! I don't even know whether I'll be alive by then. :P

Well done Wilson, I wondered who'd be the first to spot that...

I wouldn't be surprised to see 3-4 confused shitists who just skimread this thread turning up in Coniston this April.

Well I'm sure they'll have a good day, it's a lovely place! :D I think most of us understand that the organiser (moi) isn't going to be back in the UK for several months yet, and therefore it can't possibly be a 2012 event... can it? Surely the lack of directions, agenda, timetables etc will give the game away?

I'm in. I only live a few miles away, near Whitehaven. It should be the perfect time to hold a meet, as it's too early for the grockles to be clogging up the roads.

Of course you'll know the local way of predicting the weather - if you can see the Old Man of Coniston it's going to rain. If you can't see it, it's raining.

Nobody turn up in any car that's not weathertight. I'll bring my Cougar (stop sniggering at the back!), or hopefully something more interesting that I might have bought in the meantime.

A trip to the Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow (right next to the A590) would be a good thing to put on the itinerary. Not many museums have a beige Marina on display (amongst other things) like they have, so it's well worth a visit.

I've also been sort of scouring the southern end of my patch (Millom to Broughton) for big sheds. Not exactly just outside Barrow Eddy, but not too far away. If anything turns up I'll let you know. I know a few builders who are thinking of maybe jacking in work (it's scarce for them at the moment around here), and some have lock-ups and what have you. If anything sounds promising I'll PM you.

That's excellent, FA, thank you. Now please tell me your Cougar was made in Detroit in 1968...

'fraid not. It was made in Koln, Germany in 2000*.

Well, this IS Autoshite. I couldn't very well turn up in anything good, could I?

* and don't be expecting my missus to look like the wee lass in the picture, either.

:lol::lol::lol:

Anyway, keeping your ear to the ground will be much appreciated. Rental costs in the same vicinity will also be much help! Something that will let me work aound the contents of a 20ft container would be ideal; it'll need to be watertight and secure, and I expect to need it for two years, or very likely longer. Not expecting much, am I!!!

Bump, to bring this thread to the attention of volksangyl! :D

With my memory, you'll have to remind me nearer the time. The Googles tells me I have to go through Kendal to get to Coniston which is good, because I like mint cake. This meet is only 150 miles away, so it's practically on my doorstep

Honestly, I go to the trouble of living in the middle of the country and everyone interesting decides to live at the edges.

:D:D:D I'm not even on the right island yet! That's why it's so far ahead. Don't worry, I'll be resurrecting this thread often to keep it in everyone's mind.

Never need an excuse to nip up the 66 to the Lakes... I'm well up for this but have no clue what I'll be in that far ahead!

Posted

Polonez, obviously! :D It could possibly not be the only one in attendance, even! But we will have to wait and see...

Posted

Do Dutton's count as Autoshite?

If yes then I'll try to make it, we do a spring lakes tour every year and it would be nice to go a month later and be able to drop the roof even if only for an hour or so.

If you don't think Duttons count as auto shite try driving one...

Anyone who deliberately keeps four Duttons is totally welcome!

 Cheers Eddy.

Between five of us we have 8 Duttons and a westie... 2 of them are Sierra's.

We adopted the westie driver, dunno how that happened..

That's dedication! I can see my neighbours getting quite fed up having to fight through a car show every weekend....

Not half as fed up as my mrs.

To be fair one of them is in bits tucked away in a lockup... but the other three are here

The daily driver is in fair nick but the other two do need a bit of TLC.

Posted

Typical Shiter's collection then really... Can we have a pic please? I don't think I know the Legerra? Sierra yes, Phaeton yes, Transit, er yes  but not the Legerra.

Are we still talking about Duttons or wives here?
