tax question

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo this car I may have purchased (see grin thread), turns out it is neither taxed or sorned, what does this mean for us being able to tax it when we pick it up?

Of course all this might be academic because it hasn't been for an MOT yet. I suppose as it was advertised with 12 months MOT he must be confident it'll pass :?

Pick it up soon and you'll get clobbered for the whole of Feb, but if you've got the green slip with the day's date on it, I can't see that there would be a problem. If the DVLA want to go hunting the previous owner, that's up to them.

You can't tax without MoT and insurance, you'll be very lucky if a covernote arrives before Saturday. If it does then well done - walk to a post office armed with documentation, tax it, put tax in car, drive, grin.

If you can't get the covernote but you're showing on askmid.com then you can try getting taxed online, this entirely depends on both the MoT and insurance database showing up correctly. Even though you won't have the disk in your hand, they now say that you have 4 days grace or something so you can legally drive without the pointless bit of paper - print your receipt and keep it in case you're stopped.

If neither of these - trailer it!! Not worth the risk. And SORN it the day you pick it up to get rid of any risk of getting fined.

Ta, I got the cover note faxed through and the vendor is sorting the MOT (fingers crossed). So I just need the green slip? I couldn't remember if we needed another form (V60???).

A lot of insurers will email you a cover note for you to print off if you are in a rush.

EDIT: Too slow!

Not any more. You just need MOT, insurance and the green slip. Much easier! Oh, and some money unless you've gone all Historic...

Presumably the previous owner will get fined for not SORNing it when you take ownership and tax it. I'm a bit worried about the previous owner of my Maxi being clobbered for 10 years worth of non-tax/sorn fines!

Previous owners will be alright if it was already off road when the SORN regs came in. Otherwise they could be scuppered.

Oh, and spill the beans please, Louise. I never read the GOM/Grin threads.

I'm not letting on until I've got it, just in case it all goes wrong...

...but I put a cheeky offer in on a car and it was accepted

Getting it tomorrow after it goes back in for a retest.

I've since found out it's been for sale at twice the price since early December. I hope it's just the location thats been putting people off.
