German scrappy

Just wanted to share this dull image of a modern German scrapyard. Bought a lights-switch and 2 plastic door-strips for my BMW for horrendous 40€. Never again this yard! :(

They've been like that for ages. When I went to one in about 2002, you couldn't even see any cars- they had been stashed away from public view!

Oh dear, that really does look like a miserable place. Thankfully there are still some 'traditional' style breakers yards about in our green and pleasant land where you can wonder about the stacked cars, only two high mind you. We have one not far from home based in an old quarry that I've used for over 25 years now!

Alright, this is not the only yard around. I'll check another 2 or 3 ones by the end of the worst winter temperatures as I'm on the hunt for some rare parts for my E34 ('islandgrün' with 'natur' interior, rare as a rare thing...). What caught my eye on the one above was the green 924, nobody throws away such a car for nothing! Just imagine this with 'Pascha' interior...

My wife and I moved recently and went a long walk in the surrounding countryside on Saturday. We went past a mega- scrappy just iver the back from me whcih looked like heaven. they had some proper old chod in there too - must find an excuse to visit it!

I know the one you mean, but can't remember the name. Last time I was there two Eastern European fellows were trying to offload a mk.3 Golf with 2 bolts in each wheel

If you have some good shite you will have to visit it :)

s&i thomson down in Gala looks exactly like this now. Back when I lived down there 15 years ago you just wandered around and found what you wanted.

I went last year and it's just tons of cars stuff up on big shelves> You just have to go to the counter and ask for the bits you want. The only stuff you can get access to is the hugely over priced damage repairables.

I used to visit a breakers in north Hamburg called 'Kiesow'. A bit expensive, but some kwolity chod in there. You could walk around and pluck morsels from the neatly stacked (two high) rows of scrappers.

That's how they should be!

About 4/5 years ago I needed to buy a door for a Rover 400 for a workmate, he's clueless with spanners. I couldn't get one anywhere in the north west, until I went to a yard I used to visit which went all upmarket with pricing (which is why I stopped going). Oh no sir, you need to go to our new place in Skem. OK, so I trailed off to Skelmersdale in my 740 and found the new place, just like the photo above! All clean and fairly tidy, all the bodies up on racks. Driver's door sir? 1997 Rover 400? Certainly sir, 85 notes plus VAT! Dave, go and get one.

Well I picked myself up off the floor and bought the door. When Dave reappeared, it came with no window, no motor, no handle, no lock, no door card.... but at least it was the right colour for Stuart's car, silver. We set aside a Saturday morning to fit it and to be fair, everything we had to take off his rusty door came easily enough and went on the new door in the same way. But... I remember paying a tenner a go for complete doors for the likes of my Mk5 Cortina, and my Bedford CF. And scouring the piles to take them off the donors with my own hands. To me that's how a scrapyard should be.

Sounds about right. Only if it has half leatherz and 'loys.

Have you just found Allparts then...? 8)

In other scrappy based news, I got a bumper for the Vectra for a pleasing £12 from U-Pull-It on Saturday :)
