Nothing to do with cars, but as we all like a bit of nostalgia here, I thought I would share this link from the BBC website.

I used to love wandering around the long-gone local town centre branch of Halfords, years before I was old enough to drive!

We also had a great branch of Tesco in the town with a Home 'n' Wear department upstairs! All gone now.

Anyone got any similar memories or pics?

I remember the non food dept in Tesco. In the '80s when I was on holiday from school my mum and I would go into the upstairs on Tesco in the City Centre where there was a toy section and I was allowed to buy a Hasbro Trans Formers figure. :D

Once I grown out of Trans Formers I used to go to Woolworths, WH Smiths and the independent dept store Jarrolds to buy computer games on cassette for my secondhand Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48k+

From that link, I also recall Athena too. Used to buy posters from there and I think they sold 'Purple Ronnie' merchandise there too. 8)

Been trying to find a link to Halfords when they were right in the city centre, but can't find any details/pictures.

Here's a pic of the old Halfords in St Albans that I used to browse around in as a youngster. This pic is from 1986 but I think it was there much earlier than that - it's a clothes shop now, but the stone flooring in the doorway still has "Halfords" tiled into it! It closed when they opened an out of town one on a new retail park, some time in the mid-90s I think. Not the same...

My old St Annes store, where I started as a Saturday Kid - I remember the vent on the roof being removed (used to be a cafe upstairs) and it had a bargain basement which was closed off in 1986 - turned into a stockroom which was weird with these two rather grand staircases leading up to a ceiling where they had been floored over!

Both long gone now, but we had Wilfit Bike and Auto, kind of like a small Halfords, and the main Austin Rover dealer (Charles Hurst) had a motor factors in the city centre. It was about 20 yards from the High Court, so GR32 for getting "bomb-damaged" stock for buttons. I once got a Peco back box and an Audioline car stereo for a fiver, neither of which was damaged. My Dad's old office was in the upstairs of the same building.

I remember the TV advert (I think it was a Scottish thing) for 'Glens, Hutchisons, Robertsons & Stepek - Altogether Better'.

Electrical retailers now long gone I think.

^Remember that one. You could always buy any given thing cheaper elsewhere!

I used to work for RS McColls. Every minute of every day was shite. So was the pay. Still, free 'condemned' sweeties, and plenty of time to read all the car/bike mags, 'cos of the lack of customers!
