Insurance Woes

It renewal time again - this year it not the price that's got me stumped - it significant changes to the policy!

Let back-track - 6 years ago I got a company car but had 7 years NCD and my wife had recently had a claim and had zero NCD. I insured her car to preserve my NCD and being the policyholder could still drive other cars TPO - everyones a winner. I was upfront and honest and phoned insurer to tell them the wife was main driver and this actually reduced the premium.

We have been insuring the car like this ever since and have moved the policy on this basis to the best insurer every year. It has worked out really well as I am not in a position to run any old or interesting cars at the moment but have a mate who lets me drove his chod - usually Metro's, Allegro's, Mini or anything else old and cheap and doesn't mind me driving as most of them are worth less than £500 so being insured Third Party is ok.

This years renewal from Aviva is £100+ cheaper than anyone else. But they have changed definitions - I am now only the principal policyholder and wife is designated vehicle policyholder as the Main Driver. They have taken the liberty of awarding her MY NCD as they say this belongs to vehicle and to make matters worse the Driving Other Cars cover is for the vehicle policy holder (my wife). To be honest not too bothered about NCD as plan to stay in current job with comp car for the long haul, but gutted about driving other cars.

My options are - don't drive other cars or pay more for a different insurer. (or buy an old car and insure it myself!)

Buy old car, insure it yourself - then you're legal.

I suggest asking Aviva if they will 'mirror' the NCD for the second car.

A lot of companies will.

^^^^^^ but you'll lose the NCD! avoiding that was the whole point of doing what he's done.

my insurance woes is.... 10+yrs no claims asked my ins comp to put van on policy..."we don't do commercial ins" okay so i insure van with other comp and ask to add car... "we don't do multi-car policy" wtf???

so if i don't move my ncd to the van the price goes up as i start with zero ncd, if i move it to the van my car policy rises as it will be ncd

all this bollox!!! the 10+yrs has been accured by only one driver... ME... so how the fuck can i start with zero ncd if i have 10+ yrs???

is this just their way of screwing the driver over for more cash?

and is there a company that does both car/commercial ins under a joint policy that will let the ncd i have achieved over the years be applicable to both vehicles?

That's no problem, either. You just have to buy an additional 'normal' policy every couple of years and cancel it within the cooling-off period (making sure that you go with an insurer that doesn't cancel ab initio). NCD extended for another two years at a cost of a couple of tenners.

-this doesn't make sense ?

Can't you phone Aviva asn ask them to restore the poilicy and NCD to your name ? Seems petty straight forward to me.

Thread resurrection! Following this post I handed back the company car, and now we both have 10 years plus NCD.

This years issue is my current insurer instead of a renewal have sent a letter saying they won't renew my policy:

Regrettably, your current insurer, xxxxx, is unable to continue cover for the above policy due to the risks presented and the insurers ability to cover these risks.

My concern is whether I now need to declare I've had insurance declined. I might argue I never asked them to quote for next years cover, so how can they have declined?

Interestingly the company that I'm planning to use are offering a premium level with better belongings cover, hire cars and personal injury etc, but the feature that's caught my eye is driving other cars with comp cover? You have to log on and register the car for 5 days at a time, otherwise you still have TPO cover. Might be of interest to some on here who often borrow cars. The other car must be worth less than £50k.

No, that's not a decline.  Just ask them for your proof of NCB and move on to elsewhere.

What's the place offering comp cover on other cars?

No you’re fine. The question is “Have you ever had insurance cover refused, cancelled or voided”

All you’ve got is a letter saying they’re unable to offer a renewal, ie. The 12 month contract won’t be renewed.

What ‘refused’ means is if you’d called somewhere for a quote and for example non disclosed a claim, they come back and say they’ve founded a non disclosed claim so therefore are refusing you cover.
