Dragged this beauty back home on a rope the other day

fiattut002.jpg

Purchased by me and a mate for the princely sum of 100 pounds with a view that it will make a bit more on the bridge if the worst comes to the worst. Now me being me I'd like to bend out the wonky bits and keep it. Mrs www's Leon is on the turn and shouldn't get a ticket (which is due in Feb) without the kind of investment that would buy a my next 5 cars. The plan was that she could have the Pug as the timing would probably co-inside with me getting the Cortina sorted though that plan has be thwarted as she's been spoilt by the Leon and it's modern cosseting ways to the point where a base spec 205 is quite apparently not a option

However, the little Fiat has been given the nod and according to my mate who piloted back (on the tow rope) it's a nice place to be and all together a fairly decent prospect. The only* problem is the damage and what has been recorded insurance wise. We got it back in the dark and soon gave up on trying to pop the bonnet which is jammed and I haven't made the time to look further since. First impression were that the suspension is undamaged and a wing, winker and slide hammer action might see it right.

My mates picked up the v5 today and it still has mot till well into next year it's just we don't know if it's been recorded and categorised/given a death warrant by the insurance co.

Do the on line HPI checkers give details of categories? What's the best/cheapest one to use? And at the risk of being cheeky, doe's anyone have access to these kind of details at work or whatever for the fee of a virtual pint? Reg is N515JLE.

You the man :D

I've read that if the insured had 3rd party only it wouldn't be recorded anyhow which may be the case as he was a young lad, first car and only been on the road 2 weeks. Fingers crossed for it as it's low miles and decent spec, would be a shame to break and bin.

It does now you mention it, I had presumed it said sx on the wing there. Just going outside for a smoke so will check.

*edit, yep sx on the hatch and 75 on the side. Got 5 good tyres and half a tank of pez too.

Defo says 75 on the wing, and the bigger wheels and trims look like ones from a 75 too. Will get PAS rather than the 19 turn lock to lock manual steering the 55 and 60's had.

N plate, thats an early one too!

Wheels are 14's and I've been told there's no PAS, could well be lies though.

Should get some time over Crimbo to get the bonnet up because even if for any reason it's CAT A I'll be having the battery as it's a new one (can see it through gap :) ) Really hope it's sortable as I sat in it last night and it feels like it's got all the right ingredients to be a good, cheap family run about. Even has stereo controls on the steering wheel which is a first for me, no stereo though which is a shame and the conspicuous absence of rear shelf hints a pulled 'system'. Flashing blue LED gear NOB got left in though, classy.

A few mates have had one of these in the past, it did good service for both though is now scrapped (wish they'd of kept the alloys). The original owner has just purchased another of the strength of his first one though so they can't be bad.

registered 02/07/1996 4 keeper changes nothing recorded against it.

Woohoo, best I get busy then :D

Pm me your address if you'd like to claim your prize of the novelty gear nob :) fully understand if you'd rather settle for the virtual pint or give us a buzz if you need owt down south.

Thanks muchly

No worries, if you mind me i will check it on sat again, just incase it has been slow to pull through to hpi.

Much obliged, I'll drop you a pm fri night. As far as I can tell the smash was about 2 weeks back though the seller was a little vague though apparently (as transpired this afternoon has mentioned to my mate it was cat A or B!

No rust set in yet so must be fairly fresh, that or Fiats are made of high quality tin :)

Shall not spend too much time or any monies till I'm sure but plans will be to straighten it out, add wing and tow bar, red oxide were necessaries and roll as is. I'll add a few pics of damage as and when I've the time for a proper look.

Just spent the morning at the PO getting the Tina rent off to DVLA and then some time on the tyre machine slapping a tube in the van tyre that kept going flat despite paying a tenner for it to get repaired. Would have a go now but the works do is starting early so I'm off to get hammered :D

I'm about to inherit a late '94 90ELX that's been parked up for about 18months, been in the family since new and was chosen over the 75 because PAS was standard if I remember correctly. It needs a couple of jobs doing and I was surprised to find out that there is still, apparently, a live recall on brake pipe corrosion!

Check its not a cat a - doubt it is looking at it - - - - - -

Vehicles that have to be dismantled.

Cat A: Vehicle totally wrecked or burnt out.

Cat B: Vehicle has heavy damage and to be broken only.

Vehicles that can be resold

Cat C: Vehicles of this category are vehicles which the retail repair costs were over the cost of the pre accident value .They will need a VIC test carried out on them, this is done at the local DVLA testing station.

Cat D: Vehicles of this category are vehicles which the retail repair costs were below the pre_accident value of the vehicle.

Cat X:Vehicles of this categories have damage that has not been recorded, either a stolen recovered vehicle with minimal damage or a vehicle with minimal damage.

I hpi'd it at 10 am this morning rootes.

Hey not knocking you  Its just because he says the previous owner has mentioned Category a on it. It may be clear now - but not in the new year - you know insurance companies are not allways quick on these things

I know, but that's not a cat A damage, and if it was it's highly unlikely they would still have the car to sell on.

Class - only on Autoshite would you get enthuiastic peoples putting a damaged 15 year Fiat back on the road!

With a bit of work theres possibly another 2 / 3 years use out of it - I say good call :)

It can take ages for it go on system but given that bonnet is still jammed I would have thought an engineer's not seen that. Saying that there are lazy engineers who wont be bothered to open the bonnet.

I bought an XR2 off a guy who I know had gone through the insurance as fully comp, I knew the engineer and bought it through the back door. He told me it was a CAT D but to this day it doesn't show on Hpi and that was in 2005 when it was bumped..

Good luck with the rebuild but expect the chassis leg to be bolloxxed

This was my wife's old punto,cat B.

Cat B Punto

Ouch! Was she ok?

Small cut on her face and right arm from the glass !

I learnt to drive in a mk1 Punto. And then forgot all about them! Another car that has slowly faded away from our roads in the last few years. My driving instuctor had two, a shagged out 55S with the 19 turns lock to lock steering which was a nightmare on the three point turn I can tell you. Then that got changed after 120k to a (new)'99T 60SX which was quite nice.

Find someone who has the fiat diagnostics doobryfirkin too, to do a full check on the car. You don't want the whoppee cushion light on, as that is going to be an MOT fail

Only after April. It's an advisory before then.

Regarding Cat C stuff.....about 5-6 years ago I bought a K reg 320i from what used to be Doncaster Motor Spares. Was supposedly a Cat C, but I applied for the 'book and lo and behold, it turned up 10 days later. Ran the car for 7 months, sold it - and then got ag from the punter as DVLC told him it needed a VIC.

Glad the Mrs. got out that cat B one ok, looks nasty.

Sounds like the cat thing can be a bit of a minefield then. We'll see if the logbook comes back ok and get it checked again in the new year to be safe.

In the meantime I've had the bumper, headlight, wing and associated plastic shite off today and it looks all very fixable :D Once the bumper was off I got a spanner in to undo the bonnet catch, bonnet's fubared so I'll see if I can get one complete with catch from the scrappy as the bugger's still stuck fast. Insurance depending it needs wing, winker, bonnet and bumper to get back straight. Engine sounds good though rocker cover seepage has made the cam belt a bit oily :(

Few pics to add when I get them uploaded.

Bonnet's ratchet strapped down at the minute though I'm gonna pull the battery to stop it going walkies.

Jeez, these took some uploading.
