My nephew got stung by a rogue motor trader recently... to cut a long story short, the dealer didn't honour the promised money-back guarantee & now has a CCJ against them, which they're ignoring.

Whilst the matter is pursued, nephew needs a car to get to college and back.

So, is there anything out there with a bit of MoT left on it, 1.6 litre or less, ideally petrol, for 200 quid or thereabouts? Escort, Fiesta, Vectra, etc.?

Ta for any help.

That's an auto, isn't it? Will have to check with nephew that he can cope with that... what sort of money are you after? Also, whereabouts is it?

This motor trader wasn't on the outskirts of Dewsbury by any chance?

From what I understand, they were called A S Motors in Wakefield. They might have ceased trading under that name now though...

Sounds like there are a few bits of scum in the area. A friend had fun with a dealer in Dewsbry, with an Escort he bought, which turned out to be a death trap. The dealer failed to turn up in court of course.

In this case, the car was sold including road tax, but it turned out to be disabled tax & not useable.

Then the dealer failed to send the V5 (which he claimed to be waiting for from the previous owner) to DVLA, so the car's been sat in limbo for a few months with the dealer ignoring all requests for the promised refund if there was a problem with the V5, and sending very abusive text messages to my sis in response to her attempts to contact him. A nasty piece of work.

it is indeed an auto, £250 with the tax on it, about an hour north of Newcastle, but I could probably meet you half way if it helped or meet you at Durham/Newcastle stations

I hope the Police, and West Yorkshire Trading Standards are involved. Perhaps a word with the Wakefield Express & YEP wouldn't go amiss. They love rogue trader stories.

Why don't I pop round in the Land Rover and "extract" the monies owed?

OK, ta for the info. I'll have a word with nephew over the next couple of days & get back to you if he's interested.

Yep... DVLA, trading standards & the police are all involved - but they're all passing the buck onto each other. It's causing my sis no end of grief.

:lol: It might well come to something like that

How old is he?

May be worth checking if he can get classic insurance for a pre-1991 heap.

Posted

If he is under 25, most classic insurers won't touch him with a bargepole sadly

Nope, not an option... he's only 18, and he needs something that's relatively reliable.

I noticed that earlier - too expensive to insure for an 18-year old though.

EFA.

However, we are not concerned about "most" insurers here. ;)

Case in point: when I was 19, I was driving a Rover 820 (registered to my father who had never even seen it, let alone driven it) on the 'driving other cars' clause of a policy for a mk2 Fiesta that was rotting on my driveway (no 'continuous insurance' bollocks back then obviously). Most insurers didn't offer DOC to the under-25s, and most of those who did had a clause stipulating that the other car had to be insured on a separate policy, but all I needed was one that would allow me to use the loophole (yes, I did get stopped by the police, and yes, they did accept my certificate of insurance without an issue) and save a cool £700 or so.

I do obviously agree with John that it would be impossible to find even one insurer doing classic policies for 18 year olds. Might have some luck at 21.

Just out of interest, How much ticket has this got on it?

I picked up a very tidy Escort Finesse estate over the weekend... 1.6 Zetec, 89,000 miles, recent cambelt, 11 months MoT and 6 months rent, cosmetically almost perfect, everything works as it's supposed to. It had a slight blow on the exhaust, but a BRAND NEW exhaust front section and cat (now fitted) were included in the price.

Which was £355.

WIN.

How much is the insurance, I got quoted silly money for the one I just scrapped.

Posted

The insurance for that will be quite high, being a 1.6 litre 16 valve.

Posted

Insurance isn't too bad, nephew is getting quotes of about £100 more than he was quoted for the Astra.

Just goes to show, you are considered more of an insurance risk in one of those than someone under age 25. :wink

TBH it might just have been your insurance company? I thought thrat Fords got favourable insurance prices as did Vauxhalls? Thats what my insurance broker told me when I was trying to insure cars when I was a kid. Buy British for cheap insurance or Ford or Vauxhall (due to their sheer numbers on the roads). Not sure how that worked though, am just repeating what I was told.

Glad its sorted now. Is he taking up cash in hand painting and decorating now he has it?

Posted

Yep, I'm glad it's sorted too... I had a minor panic at the reports of high insurance from Volksy & Felly, so I called this morning to check how he was getting on. Just over a grand isn't a bad price for an 18-year old in a 1.6 16v car, I suppose.

lol @ painting & decorating, hehe.

In my experience, this OMG U NID A SMAL CAR 4 CHEAP INSOORANZ is just a mindless exaggeration. When I was 18 (in 2000), everyone would tell me that I need the smallest car I can get etc. In reality, the premium for a 2.9 Granada (group 16 I think) was only about 40% higher than that for the absolute cheapest car to insure (and I looked at everything- I think the cheapest one was the FIAT 126 BIS). More recently, I've seen the same happen to younger friends. I doubt going from 1.3 to 1.6 or 1.4 to 1.8 would make a noteworthy difference.

One of the main issues with car insurance is not the car or drivers age but your postal code area. To insure a Ford Fiesta Diesel 1800 non turbo driver over 40 with 16 years no claims I was quoted £855. Change postal code to parents house 15 miles away from home and it comes down to £480.
